New Mexico Heritage Preservation Month celebrates Roadside Historic Markers…Official Scenic Historic Markers began dotting New Mexico roadsides 78 years ago. Today, more than 680 of the distinctive, rough-hewn brown signs commemorate the state’s geographic marvels, the notorious and honorable, and sites where history was made.
Official Scenic Historic Markers began springing up along New Mexico roadsides in 1935 when Americans were taking to the highway in force. The markers capitalized on the burgeoning number of motorists, attracting them with their lively history and maps denoting points of interest. The idea was to get motorists off the highway and into nearby communities to witness New Mexico’s unique heritage and infuse local economies with some cash. New Mexico Highway/Historic Division
