German U-boats were able to evade detection by Allied ships and destroy American convoys during WWII due to their superior maneuverability compared to larger battleships. The US responded by developing smaller destroyer escort ships to hunt U-boats, having both anti-submarine capabilities and maneuverability. The US Navy allegedly conducted experiments on the USS Eldridge in 1943 using high-voltage electric currents to try to make the ship invisible to radar as a potential way to evade detection, but the experiments had unintended effects on the crew's health and may have even caused the ship to teleport briefly. The Navy kept details of the failed experiments secret.
