 There is a special name for words that have the
  same or similar meaning as other words. These
  words are called SYNONYMS.
 We just matched some synonyms:
   Cold-Cool
   Pretty-Beautiful

 A trick to remember Synonyms is that
 Same and Synonym both start with the letter “S”.
 There are words that have the opposite meaning of
  other words.
 Let’s match some opposite words together.
 Which word from list A has the opposite meaning as a
  word from list B?

 Read the following sentences and tell which two
     words are synonyms:

3.    I will throw the ball and you will toss it back.
4.    If you listen closely, you will hear the birds.
5.    The stars were shiny and the planets were bright.
6.    The tiny dollhouse had a lot of little furniture.
7.    I was sad to see my friend so unhappy.
8.    The noisy truck had a very loud engine.
 Read the following sentences and tell which two
  words are antonyms:
1. I put the wet towel on the clothesline to dry.
2. You will start the project when you finish the test.
3. He will throw the ball and you will catch it.
4. The kids will not eat what the adults cooked.
5. The huge yard was full of little flowers.
6. The cat had black fur and white paws.
7. The silky fabric had a rough trim.
8. Turn left and drive right up to the house.
 Read each sentence. Replace the underlined word with a
    synonym for that word.
   1. Many people enjoy the holidays.          Like, love

 Read each sentence. Replace the underlined word with an
  antonym for that word.

 My students often ask, “Why do I need to learn this?”
 Learning about synonyms and antonyms will make
  you a more interesting and better speaker, story teller
  and writer.
 When you get to high school or go to college, you will
  need to be descriptive in your writing.
 When you are out with friends, you will want to be able
  to tell interesting or exciting stories.
 Think about this…
Read the following two paragraphs
and decide which one is more exciting?
Paragraph One:
 I watched a great movie the other day. The special
  effects were great. The actors did a great job. I couldn’t
  believe how great the sound was in the theater. I heard
  they are making a sequel. I bet it will be great!
Paragraph Two:
 I watched a terrific movie the other day. The special
  effects were awesome. The actors did an outstanding
  job. I couldn’t believe how wonderful the sound was in
  the theater. I heard they are making a sequel.
  I bet it will be incredible!
I think we can all agree that Paragraph
Two is definitely more exciting to read!
 Words that have the same or similar meaning as
    other words are called SYNONYMS.
   A trick to remember synonyms is that the words
    same and synonym both start with “S”.
   Some examples of synonyms are:
   Hot-warm
   Cool-cold
   Big-huge
   Sleep-snooze
   Great-wonderful
 Words that have the opposite meaning as other
    words are called ANTONYMS.
   Some examples of antonyms are:
   Warm-cool
   Black-white
   Up-down
   Left-right
   Fast-slow
   Short-long
The more you know about synonyms and
antonyms, the better and more interesting
   speaker and writer you will become!

  • 2.  There are words that have the same meaning or similar meanings to other words.  Let’s match some similar words together.  Which word from list A has the same or similar meaning as a word from list B? LIST A LIST B Cold Little Warm Quick Big Cool Small Hot Fast Pretty Beautiful Large
  • 3.  There is a special name for words that have the same or similar meaning as other words. These words are called SYNONYMS.  We just matched some synonyms:  Cold-Cool  Pretty-Beautiful  A trick to remember Synonyms is that  Same and Synonym both start with the letter “S”.
  • 4.  There are words that have the opposite meaning of other words.  Let’s match some opposite words together.  Which word from list A has the opposite meaning as a word from list B? LIST A LIST B Cold Little Up Down Big Thin Fat Short Black Hot Tall White
  • 5.  There is a special name for words that have the opposite meaning as other words.  These words are called ANTONYMS.  We just matched some antonyms:  Hot-Cold  Tall-Short  Left-right  Up-down

  • 7.  Read the following sentences and tell which two words are synonyms: 1. Please stop talking while I am speaking. 2. The puppy had filthy paws and dirty fur. 3. I will throw the ball and you will toss it back. 4. If you listen closely, you will hear the birds. 5. The stars were shiny and the planets were bright. 6. The tiny dollhouse had a lot of little furniture. 7. I was sad to see my friend so unhappy. 8. The noisy truck had a very loud engine.

  • 11.  My students often ask, “Why do I need to learn this?”  Learning about synonyms and antonyms will make you a more interesting and better speaker, story teller and writer.  When you get to high school or go to college, you will need to be descriptive in your writing.  When you are out with friends, you will want to be able to tell interesting or exciting stories.  Think about this… Read the following two paragraphs and decide which one is more exciting?
  • 12. Paragraph One:  I watched a great movie the other day. The special effects were great. The actors did a great job. I couldn’t believe how great the sound was in the theater. I heard they are making a sequel. I bet it will be great! Paragraph Two:  I watched a terrific movie the other day. The special effects were awesome. The actors did an outstanding job. I couldn’t believe how wonderful the sound was in the theater. I heard they are making a sequel. I bet it will be incredible! I think we can all agree that Paragraph Two is definitely more exciting to read!
  • 13.  Words that have the same or similar meaning as other words are called SYNONYMS.  A trick to remember synonyms is that the words same and synonym both start with “S”.  Some examples of synonyms are:  Hot-warm  Cool-cold  Big-huge  Sleep-snooze  Great-wonderful
  • 14.  Words that have the opposite meaning as other words are called ANTONYMS.  Some examples of antonyms are:  Warm-cool  Black-white  Up-down  Left-right  Fast-slow  Short-long
