Answer to these questions:
Why is the climate of Spain mild?
Because of its situation next to the sea and not far from the equator
What possible effect on the climate might some gases have?
Some gases can make the planet warmer
Wrong or right (if wrong write it correctly)
Today, the climate is very bad
Today the weather is very bad
The Spanish weather is usually hot in summer
The Spanish climate is ussually hot in summer
Weather and Climate
Activities

Pupil´s book page 75 - Answer to questions 1 – 2 - 3
In drawing 1, where are the Sun´s rays more perpendicular: point A or
point B?
At point B the rays are more perpendicular
Which place has the warmer climate?
Point B has the warmer climate.
In drawing 2, if at th sea level the temperature is 28º, and at the top of the
mountain is 10º, What is the heigh of the mountain?
The mountain is 2.880 meters high, since the difference in temperture is
18º. (18 x 160 = 2.880).
In drawing 3, Why has the village by the sea a milder climate than the
city?
Due to the influence of the sea and the mountains.

1. What do you think the phrase “climate change” means?
The change in the Earth´s climate because of global warming,
caused by human activity.

Characteristics
Depending on the geographical situation and the
three factors that influence in the climate we can see
the differences in:
Temperatures
Precipitations
Vegetation
Climates in Spain
Climate

Temperatures

Precipitations

Vegetation

Atlantic

Mild all year, cooler in
winter than in summer

Abundant rain all year

Meadows , woods with
chestnuts and oaks

Continental

Very hot summer, very cold
winter. Big influence of the
mountains surrounding the
Meseta.

Not much rain,
concentrate in spring
and autumn

A few trees. Holm oak
and pine.

Mediterranean

Summer-Autumn hot,
Winter-spring mild

Mostly in Auntumn.
Can be heavy.

A few trees. Holm oak,
cork oak, pine. Also
bushes.

ContinentalMediterranean

Winter less cold than
continental but summer is
hotter.

Little rain but more
than in contienntal.

Holm oaks, cork oaks
and a lot of olive trees.

Mountain

Very cold winter, mild
summer

A lot of rain. In winter,
snow

Little vegetation. In
lower areas pines.

Subtropical

Warm and mild all year. Not
big seasons difference.

Not much rain, more in
the north than in the
south.

Own vegetation:
dragon tree, canary
pine, laurel.

1 . Name and characteristis of the Climates
Green – Atlantic - Mild all year, cooler in winter than in summer - Abundant rain
all year
Red – Mountain - Very cold winter, mild summer - A lot of rain. In winter, snow
Yellow - Very hot summer, very cold winter. Big influence of the mountains
surrounding the Meseta - Not much rain, concentrate in spring and autumn
Pink – Subtropical - Warm and mild all year. Not big seasons difference - Not
much rain, more in the north than in the south.
Purple – Continental-Mediterranean - Winter less cold than continental but
summer is hotter - Little rain but more than in contienntal
Orange – Mediterranean - Summer-Autumn hot, Winter-spring mild - Mostly in
Auntumn. Can be heavy.

2 . Complete the paragraph
It is a continental climate.
It has extreme temperatures, because
It rains very little.
Winters are very cold.
It snows very little.
In summer, the temperatures are very hot.
1 Name the three factors that affect the climate
Altitude above sea level.
Proximity to the equator.
Proximity to the sea.
2 Choose the right option
The closer a place is to the EQUATOR / HORIZON, the WARMER / COLDER its climate. This occurs
because in OCEANIC / TROPICAL areas the rays of the sun strike the earth HORIZONTALLY /
PERPENDICULARY and warm the earth more.
The closer a place is to the EQUATOR , the WARMER its climate. This occurs because in TROPICAL
areas the rays of the sun strike the earth PERPENDICULARY and warm the earth more.
The higher a location´s LATITUDE / ALTITUDE above the level of the SEA / EQUATOR, the WARMER /
COLDER its climate will be. In general, the temperature DECREASES / INCREASES one degree for
every 160 metre increase in altitude. Therefore, the climate in mountainous regions is WARMER /
COLDER than the climate in lower areas.
The higher a location´s ALTITUDE above the level of the SEA , the COLDER its climate will be. In
general, the temperature DECREASES one degree for every 160 metre increase in altitude.
Therefore, the climate in mountainous regions is COLDER than the climate in lower areas.
The closer an area is to the sea,, the MILDER / COLDER the climate. This occurs because it takes the
sea MORE TIME / LESS TIME than the earth to warm up or cool down, so that in summer, the winds
blow WARM / COOL breezes from the sea to the land, while in the winter the winds are COOL /
WARM.
The closer an area is to the sea,, the MILDER the climate. This occurs because it takes the sea MORE
TIME than the earth to warm up or cool down, so that in summer, the winds blow COOL breezes
from the sea to the land, while in the winter the winds are WARM.

  • 16. 1 Name the three factors that affect the climate Altitude above sea level. Proximity to the equator. Proximity to the sea. 2 Choose the right option The closer a place is to the EQUATOR / HORIZON, the WARMER / COLDER its climate. This occurs because in OCEANIC / TROPICAL areas the rays of the sun strike the earth HORIZONTALLY / PERPENDICULARY and warm the earth more. The closer a place is to the EQUATOR , the WARMER its climate. This occurs because in TROPICAL areas the rays of the sun strike the earth PERPENDICULARY and warm the earth more. The higher a location´s LATITUDE / ALTITUDE above the level of the SEA / EQUATOR, the WARMER / COLDER its climate will be. In general, the temperature DECREASES / INCREASES one degree for every 160 metre increase in altitude. Therefore, the climate in mountainous regions is WARMER / COLDER than the climate in lower areas. The higher a location´s ALTITUDE above the level of the SEA , the COLDER its climate will be. In general, the temperature DECREASES one degree for every 160 metre increase in altitude. Therefore, the climate in mountainous regions is COLDER than the climate in lower areas. The closer an area is to the sea,, the MILDER / COLDER the climate. This occurs because it takes the sea MORE TIME / LESS TIME than the earth to warm up or cool down, so that in summer, the winds blow WARM / COOL breezes from the sea to the land, while in the winter the winds are COOL / WARM. The closer an area is to the sea,, the MILDER the climate. This occurs because it takes the sea MORE TIME than the earth to warm up or cool down, so that in summer, the winds blow COOL breezes from the sea to the land, while in the winter the winds are WARM.
