Preface

Beijing Compunicate Technologies Inc. is China’s leading supplier of DVB head-
end products and solutions.
Compunicate was founded in January 1997 by several scientists, experts, Ph.D
holders with background in image compression and digital video broadcast
technology. Since 1996, Compunicate has begun to participate in the
establishment of digital TV standards and the research and development of
corresponding products and systems, accumulating a wealth of experience in the
field of digital TV.
Compunicate insists on the independent R&D. Our products include different
parts of head-end infrastructure and value-added service platforms of digital TV.
Compunicate produced the first DVB MPEG2 encoder in 1998, deployed the first
Chinese DVB Simulcrypt Conditional Access system in 2000 which is one of the
CAS recommended by SARFT and launched the first fully integrated mosaic
system in the world in 2004. Since then, the system has been updated to the
third generation, and hold the first market share compared with similar products.
The products of Compunicate have been widely used in more than 60 countries
all over the world. Compunicate obtained certificate of conformity awarded by the
EU in 2007 and the certificate awarded by SARFT.
Compunicate has also undertaken many China National key R&D projects and
won "Silver Medal of National Science and Technology Achievement Award"
twice in the year of 2000 and 2002 respectively. By the end of 2008 and 2009,
Compunicate is awarded twice the “Top 10 National Brand” in broadcasting and
television area.
Compunicate has established quality guarantee system according to the
international standard and has gained ISO9001 certificate, which increase the

Chapter 1 Requirement Analysis

1. Requirement Analysis

The digital cable television or community antenna television (CATV) system
could provide the best quality TV programs to the spectators because the signals
are transmitted by hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network. The total system includes
head-end system, HFC network, and clients of STB and TV set.

There are plenty of bandwitch in HFC network, so the number of programs
maybe more than 100. The programs could come from satellite, fibre, local TV
station.

Moreover, the project should comply with international standards, such as DVB
and TCP/IP. The proposal should be advanced, practical, security, and openend,
which could be updated and expanded in future.

2. Head-end System Constitution

Basic Head-End Platform
The basic head-end system should receive all kinds of TV signal, and convert to
standard transport stream (TS), then broadcasting to the HFC network or IP
network. The mainly equipments include satellite dish, receiver, multiplexer,
modulator, CAS and EPG system, etc.
Conditional Access System
Based on the head-end hardwares, CTI-CAS, which includes CAS Core module
and SMS module, could support TV operators pay-TV service. The CAS Core
module works with scrambler to scrambling the transport streams, as well as
works with SMS module for managing subscribers, statistic, authority, and
account in order to guaranetee the business income and improve the
management.
Value-Added Service
In the future, operators could add some value-added services, such as mosaic
navigation, video broadcasting, short message charge, etc.

3. HFC network

The Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) network is composed of optical fiber main line,
coaxial cable branch, and access network. The fiber optic network extends from
the cable operators' master headend, sometimes to regional headends, and out

to a neighbourhood's hubsite, and finally to a fiber optic node which serves
anywhere from 25 to 2000 homes.

4. Receiver System

The most popular receiver is Set Top Box. Recently the digital TV set sale is
increasing. The receivers should have the functions of demodulating, decoding
MPEG-2 signal, EPG display. Some advanced receivers could show data-
broadcasting content and support mosaic guide. If there are scrambled programs,
the corresponding descrambling funciton is needed.

Chapter 2 Total solution of head-end
system
The cable network could have plenty of programs, which come from satellite,
SDH, or local TV, etc. The quatity of equipments is mainly due to the program
sources. For example, if several programs are from the same satellite, and have
the same frequency parameters, they could be received by one satellite receiver.
However, if they are from different satellite, we have to use more satellite
receivers. The situation of SDH adapter is similar to satellite receiver.
Because the electromagnetic environment in HFC is very good, the modulator is
almost quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The mode of 64 QAM is
recommended by which the digital bitrate could achieve 38 Mbps in an 8 MHz
channel. If each program bitrate is 6 Mbps, 6 programs could be multiplexed in
one channel. If each program bitrate is 4.5 Mbps, 8 programs could be together.
The excess bandwidth about 2 Mbps is commonly used for CAS and EPG
packets.
Fomula is D * N * 188/204 = D * (lg QAM/ lg2) * 188/204

D is symbolrate, could be estimated like this: Bandwidth / (1+0.16), or the
common value in some countries. N is the logarithm of the QAM mode. In RS
code, a 204 bytes packet is used to transmit 188 bytes net data.

3. System Description

The recommended head-end solution includes mainly Compunicate products,
and some our purchased products in long term, which benefit quick supply and
easy intergration. In the stage of construction, operators could consult this
system for bidding sub-systems respectively in order to use the best product. We
are glad to support in technique and engineering as always.

4.1 Satellite program

There are two kinds of satellite programs which have to be received my
Powervu9850 or free-to-air (FTA) SD & HD program. The free program could be
received by MPEG-2 SD or MPEG-4 SD satellite receiver.
In cable network, the satellite programs could be transmitted without encoding.
So the receiver should output TS stream directly which maybe including several
programs (MPTS). If several programs have the same frequency, symbolrate,
polarization, and they are from the same satellite, they could be transmitted by
the same receiver.

4.2 Signal Process (multiplex, scramble, modulate)

All the output signals of receivers, enter into the multiplexers and scramblers.
Here we suggest use EM800 Platform (including ASI input cards) which can
support ASI and IP output and S100 Scrambler for DVB-C STB and IP STB..
Compunicate EM800 Platform supports 4PCS ASI input cards in 1U chassis at
most and each ASI input card can support 4 ASI input (SPTS or MPTS), supports
ASI and IP outputs.

The EM800 platform could multiplex all input transport streams into one multi
program transport stream (MPTS). The scrambler could scramble the clear TS
stream into scrambling TS stream by interchanging message with CAS system.
The newwork management system could monitor all ASI port by GUI interface,
support editing NIT/PAT/PMT/SDT/CAT tables and transferring all tables.
The scrambled streams enter modulator and transmitter for broadcasting over
carrier waves.

4.4 Electronic Program Guide

Compunicate SI-EPG system could insert service informations (SI) into transport
streams, including detailed event information table (EIT) which could be used for
electronic program guide (EPG) service.
SI-EPG system has Client / Server structure, based on network and distributed
database system. The software module could be distributed on several
workstations and servers or installed in one server. In this case, it is enough to
use one edit workstation, one SI server and one SI injector.
Actually, the SI-EPG system could not only send EPG information, but also send
all SI information. These informations have different feature in application. The SI
information is needed to be edited only when the DTV head-end system begin to
establish or change. It may keep long time without any operation. However, the
EPG information should be changed daily, weekly, or monthly. So the SI-EPG
system supports program schedule import and export of many TXT and XML
format to improve efficiency.
Moreover, the SI-EPG system has lots of powerful functions, such as online edit
and offline edit, multi languages, word check, schedule censorship, etc. Specially,
the system could support new mosaic navigation descriptors in which some of
our inventions have been adopted by lots of international companies.

4.5 CAS & SMS

CTI-CAS system manages all subscribers, environment, accounts, and
authorization informations by means of distributed workstations, servers and
database. The CAS connects to scrambler with standard interface to send
authorization message to the receivers.
CTI-CAS core module includes EMM generator (EMMG) and ECM generator
(ECMG). ECMG gets access criteria (AC) information and control word (CW)
from the simulcrypt synchroniser (SCS) module of scrambler, then generates
encrypted entitlement control message (ECM) information and returns it to SCS
by standard interface. EMMG generates encrypted entitlement management
message (EMM) from SMS database, then submits it to scrambler for
broadcasting. All transfer of the ECM, EMM is encrypted professionally for high
security.
SMS module is another important module of CTI-CAS which has payment,
distributing smart cards, query, print invoice, statics functions and so on. All
subscribers’ information is managed by SMS which has kinds of interface with
other system outside. For example, EPG interface, short message charging
interface, bank interface, etc.
CTI-CAS supports channel, subject, level, event process, and PPV, IPPV
functions, has flexible addressing, Bmail and on screen display (OSD) message
functions, etc. The standard system could support 3,000,000 subscribers, and
could be upgraded smoothly.
CTI-CAS accords with international and national stardards completely. It has
open interfaces for third party systems, has work well with many scramblers,
BOSS systems and STBs in hundreds of projects all over the world.

4.6 Summary

So the head-end solution is designed mainly with Compunicate products. We
could provide first class engineering service and advanced hardware & software

3. EM800 Platform

EM800 platform is a new multimedia platform of CTI, which integrates encoder,
multiplexer and scrambler into 1 RU chassis by kinds of cards. It supports 8
channels MPEG-2 / H.264 encoding, 16 channels multiplexing or scrambling,
with ASI and Gigabit output.
This product is suitable for digital TV head-end establishment or expansion.
EM800 has the advantage of stable performance, good compatibility, high
integration, and easy operation. It can save maintenance cost and space for
operators.

4. Scrambler (CTI S100)

S100 Scrambler is a 1U highly integrated product, which is mainly used for digital
TV program scrambling. It supports DVB simulcrypt scrambling standard. With
the control words generator embedded, it can scramble the MPEG transport
stream and produce scrambling control words, use fixed or variable control words
to scramble, support service level and component level scrambling. With
external network management , the remote management can be accomplished
by one PC installing the browser.

Baseband signal and additional data multiplexing comply with ISO/IEC-13818
standard. The scrambler output interface is DVB standard ASI interface. The
RJ45 Ethernet interface supporting TCP/IP protocol is used for the connecting
with CA and network management.

6. Network Management Workstation

All of the Compunicate products could be managed through TCP/IP network.
The network management system (NMS) software could be used to config
parameters and monitor status of equipment remotely.

Chapter 4 CTI Conditional Access

System

1 CTI CAS Summary

1.1 Introduce

CTI CAS is a high-security conditional access system that never been broken. It
has been used in more than 200 projects with over 5 million subscribers in 60
countries.
CTI CAS has many secure techniques including high-security chipset solution,
multi-layer keys, independent developed encryption algorithm, EAL 5+ level
smart card and so on. It has obtained the class A certificate and is recommended
by State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT).
CTI CAS can support DVB simulcrypt standard and lots of functions, such as
PPV, IPPV, VOD, PUSH VOD, prepaid, multi-TV, region control, STB paring etc.
It can provide a secure, stable, powerful, flexible and standard compatible
conditional access system and billing solution for digital TV operators.

The TVM module and PMS module can be considered for advanced functions
such as prepaid or IPPV. If there is VOD or PVR application, the PRCA module
will be needed. Moreover, the BCA module can protect the important message in
the bidirectional network.

1.2 Components Brief

System Core Module (CAS): It is the basic module of CTI CAS including ECMG,
EMMG, EIS and database which provides the normal functions such as register,
entitlement, Bmail etc. System core is comprised by three parts: headend system,
STB core, and smart card.
Subscriber Management Module (SMS): the processing, the maintenance and
the management of the subscriber information, subscribers’ equipments
information, programs ordering information, subscribers’ authorization information,

and financial information, providing meanwhile the basic data of subscribers’
authorization management for the other subsystem.
Program Management Module (PMS): As database application software, PMS
links efficiently the description of digital TV operation (service), the description of
digital TV program information (event), the scrambling control of digital TV and
the definition of digital TV products, providing control data and management data
for the function of CAS. Cooperating with the other systems, PMS helps to form
one integrated operation process including: program scheme (program guide and
management), the control and the management of authorization (conditional
access) and charge management.
Short Message Payment Module (TVM): providing for the broadcasting
operators multifarious value-added services as: charging by short message,
balance query, product order, transition, customers complain and service help etc
by the short message gateway and short message server to transfer the short
messages.
Bi-directional Enhanced Module (BCA): based on the function of the CAS core
module, using the secure bidirectional information returning channel, the PKI
technology and digital sign, digital certificate to improve the confidentiality,
authentication and incontestableness and to provide for the operator a more
reliable manner to ensure the security of online alternative operation such as:
VOD, online game, puzzles and purchase etc.
Pre-Encryption Module (PRCA): The pre-encryption system scrambles the
video and audio streaming files and multiplexes the key with the encrypted video
and audio streams together. The STB must be online to receive authorization for
watching. It is used for VOD, PUSH VOD, PVR applications.

CTI CAS complies with DVB Simulcrypt standard. The CAT, ECM, EMM are
supported and some interface is open to other DTV system. It could be integrated

CTI CAS has never been broken. There are many advanced technique, such as
multi-level encryption, self-developed algorithm, operation system in card, EAL
5+ level smart card, security chipset for STB, etc.
l High-Security Chipset Solution
It is the newest secure method for client device that is against control word
redistribution (CWR) and device software tempering. There is a secure channel
between smart card and descrambling chipset where the CW is encrypted. Every
chipset has unique identify and the public/private keys system protects the
software in the memory of STB.
l Multi TV
The master / subsidiary cards are applied for multi TV and STB in home. Then
the operator could provide different price for the second or third STB in a family.
l Region Control / Pairing of card and STB
These functions can help the operator to manage subscribers in different regions.
l EIS / PMS
The EIS / PMS can exchange the event information with EPG system, and
provide event database for ECM generator or other systems.
l PPV / IPPV-T
CTI CAS supports OPPC, OPPV, and IPPV. Moreover, we created IPPV-T
function by which subscribers can watch the unordered channel and pay by time.
l Prepaid by mobile message
CTI CAS can support TV message system, which could send and receive short
message with mobile phone. Then operators can sale prepaid card at shops or

supermarket, the subscriber can buy it and charge or order product via short
message of handset.
l Pre-Encrypt for VOD
The Pre-Encryption is a new function for video on demand service. The program
file could be encrypted and saved at storage array of VOD system. It could only
be watched online and could not play without authority.
l Audience Statics (rating)
In bidirectional network, the STB could response the statics information. So it will
be easily to know the most popular program and the golden period in various
channels for advertisement.
l Redundant
The important servers in the system have hot-backup. The database could be
updated to backup server automatically. So if there is any critical error, the
system could be restored in short time.
l Local Program Insert
If there are several local programs in the sub headend, these programs could be
scrambled by the local scrambler or multiplexer or IPQAM device. Some
important messages such as ECM / EMM can be transmitted between the CAS
at main headend and the scramblers at sub headend by the VPN network.

2 System Core Module (CAS)

2.1 System Summary

The system core module (CAS) is a high-security DVB simulscrypt conditional
access system that supports DVB common scrambling equipments. It uses
several standard encrytion algorithms, Compunicate encryption algorithm and
multi-layers encryption system. Moreover, it can support the high-security chipset
solution and EAL5+ smart card.

The system core module of CTI_CAS is constituted of head end system, CA core
software, smart card system.
l Headend system
It takes charge of scrambling control of digital video and audio programs by
hardware and CAS software.
l CA core software
It is integrated on the chipset of certificated STBs which get control word (CW)
from smart card and descramble the TS stream.

It includes smart card and distribution system. The smart card is different for
every subscriber of different TV network.

2.2 Main Functions

l The registration of new subscribers

The registration of new subscribers requires registering the basic information of
the customers, such as the user name, address, contacting number, number of
smart card, card address information and ordered product information etc. After
registered successfully in the SMS module, the customer information will be
transferred from the interface between SMS and CAS to CAS system, of which is
partly broadcasted by CAS to the customer’s smart card.

l suspending, resuming and annulment of the subscribers

The operator can chose to suspend, resume or annul the service which the
subscribers have ordered according to their needs. The subscribers will not be
able to watch the scrambled program after the operator suspends the
authorization. If the subscriber is annulled, the smart card will not be available.

l Emergency authorization

The emergency authorization function is set for sending rapidly the authorization
to the subscribers. The CAS system sends rapidly in a certain period the
authorization information to the subscribers who can immediately receive the
ordered program on the STB.

l Pre-authorize of program channel

The subscribers can reserve the program by the pre-authorization function of
CAS. And the authorization will be invaluable after the program ends.

l Annulment of the channel authorization

The reservation could be annulled according to the demand of the subscribers.
And relevant scrambled channels will not be able to be watched after the
annulment.

l OSD sending

CAS supports the information sending. The long text can be broadcasted as
MAIL to the subscribers’ STB and then be read on the TV. The subscribers can
also receive the short message of the operators as OSD on the TV screen. The
direct, convenient and non-traditional OSD mode saves largely the human and
material resource.

l Multilevel CA technology

CTI_CAS supports multilevel management by using one CA system. The chief
authorization center is set in the main district where the unique CAS is installed.
Every divisional district has its own SMS by which the SMS information is
transferred to the authorization center of the main district. The authorization
information is sent together by the center so that the authorization for the
divisional districts is controlled by the main district as well as the divisional
districts hold the right to the management of its own subscribers.

The CTI_CAS has complied with multi encrypt algorithm, such as: DES, 3 levels
DES and CTI developed independently algorithm which is admitted by National

To satisfy the needs of different favors for TV programs of family members, the
powerful and flexible CTI_CAS provides the function of mother and seed card
control to ensure that the subscribers watch their favorite programs on different
STB at the same times. Several smart cards can be distributed to one subscriber,
one of which is mother card and the others are seed cards. The main difference
between mother card and seed card is that the available period of the seed card
is limited. The duration can be configured according with the need of the
operators from 1 min to 40 days. To receive normally the scrambled programs,
the seed card should acquire the authorization from the mother card STB. During
the operation, the property of mother card and seed card can be exchanged by
sending EMM authorization information. However one mother card should be
guaranteed.

l Sharing group authorization

The CTI_CAS supports various addressing function, including personal
addressing, sharing address and group addressing, and logistic addressing, by
which the operators can configure different audience property, can authorize
totally the subscribers group who have special connection and can sending
information in best times.

l PPV / IPPV / IPPV-T

The CTI_CAS provides various program ordering modes: PPV, IPPV, IPPV-T etc
which the subscribers can self determinate. This function needs PMS module.

l User card charge

The CTI_CAS provides user card charging function. The subscribers can charge
in the operating hall and the charging information will be recorded by SMS and
write to smart card by EMM. The short message charging is also supported.

l Smart card deleting

The smart card deleting function helps to protect the operators’ profit and
controls effectively the distribution of pirate cards. The operators can delete
simply the number of smart card pirated to prevent unallowed subscribers from
watching scrambled programs.

l District control

The CTI_CAS can send different district codes to STB in different districts
corresponding. Meanwhile the district codes will also be written into the smart
card according with the subscribers’ addresses. To watch normally the TV
program, the district code in the smart card should match to the one sent by the
system. The function enhances the flexibility of selling strategy and ensures the
security for the operators. The STB should bind with the smart card to prevent
the circulation of smart card in current district.

l Machine and card match

The STB should bind with the smart card which means one STB supports only
the matching smart card, protecting effectively the operators’ profits.

l Key updating

On account of the aperiodic CW updating for 5 seconds to 10 seconds, the
CTI_CAS is able to keep high security. All keys update termly by sending
renewed EMM information.

l Encryption algorithm selection

The common encryption algorithms, including DES and 3DES, and special CTI
encryption algorithm are used to ensure the high security of data and CAS.

l Anti- recording tag

The permission of program recording can be admitted of forbidden by configuring
the transferring programs.

l Finger print technology

The electronic finger print technology of the CAS protects the copyright of
valuable programs. The finger print information is stuck to the protected
programs for copyright tracking to protect the operators’ profits.

l Parents level control

The CTI_CAS can set level limited information for broadcasting programs to
allow the subscribers to use password for different level programs depending on
family members’ situation which prevent the minors from watching inappropriate
programs.

l TVM interface

The TVM module is one of the most important extended modules of CAS, which
supports account querying, charging, purchasing and annulling operations by
sending messages.

l Card number control

The card numbers can be updated by CAS while the operation is extending. The
subscribers will not be able to watch normally the scrambled programs if their
cards are not updated. This function protects effectively the operators’ profits.

The programs switching function can oblige the subscribers to change to the
special channel which broadcasts important information as earthquake, flood or
international affairs etc.

l TV watching period control

l Redundancy system

The redundancy system contains two parts, one of which is for the application
program backup of CAS by using special software which ensures that one of the
servers will keep corresponding to the accessing and that the application
program of CAS works uninterruptedly. The other part takes charge of the
backup for database. Once the fault is detected, the accessing will be switched
automatically to the backup database server to ensure the security of the data in
the server.

2.5 CA core software

STB receives scrambled TS and filters out the ECM and EMM information, then
sends it to smart card by means of the CA core software. There are special
regulars and commands between the STB and the smart card that is already
integrated inside the CA core software.
After receiving the ECM, EMM information, by interrelated processing, the smart
card will write the authorization information into the subscribers’ authorization
data area, and unscrambles CW in accordance with the authorization condition
and pointing key, and send it to STB. Then STB will pass CW to descramblers.
The program can be normally watched only if the descrambling CW is correct. If
the high-security chipset is used in STB, the CW will only appear inside the
chipset.

The CA Core software system receives and processes ECM, EMM information
sent by CAS, obtains descrambling CW and sends it to descramblers. It provides
meanwhile the additional information related to CAS for receiving devices for
displaying.

2.6 Smart Card System

2.6.1 Smart Card

The smart card contains hardware and software. The hardware is a smart
chipset on a plastic card. The software is the card operating system (COS) and
private applications developed by CTI.

Several smart cards are used in CAS, including: system mother card, system
control card, system key card, terminal users’ cards. The system mother card is
system total control card which takes responsibility of generating other card and
provides basic data. System control card is used to control the license right and
relevant basic parameters of each module. The system key card is startup key for
all types of cards to ensure the validity of card uses. Terminal users’ card which
is for uses of the subscribers, can provide authorization of teleview for them and
make sure that the legal subscribers watch normally the paying programs.

The smart card, which is a plastic card, has an embedded IC chip containing
CPU and ROM, EPROM, RAM EEPROM. This embedded chip, which maintains
hardware and software protecting and secrecy processing technique, connects
externally through asynchronism bus interfaces and uses CPU for serial I/O link
control. To prevent effectively the illegal attacks, the memorizer embedded in the
chip can not be accessed externally. The main features are as the following:

l Storage capacity: its internal storage capacity from a few dozen to a few
dozen bytes K bytes

l Complicated security algorithms: hardware supporting symmetrical DES
accelerated algorithms, maximally supporting 2 random data generator,
capable for high level self encryption function.

l High level security: special hardware logistic design for encrypted IC card,
the configurations of reading and writing feature in several areas of IC card
are controllable, which is to ensure unchangeableness of the information in
IC before the password is checked. The IC will lock automatically to prevent
the writing operation if the password is wrong. The matching of entering
password and system setting password is obligatory for system accessing. At
present, CTI smart card has obtained EAL5+ certificate.

l High reliability: IC card Magnetically-shielded, anti-static, anti-interference
capability and more reliable than magnetic card. Information can be read and
written 10-500,000 times, use time from 10 to 100 years.

l Low requirement for network: the absolute security reliability of IC card allows
the lower demand for real-time and sensitivity of network during the
application which enable to apply the system in lower network environment.

l The reading and writing structure of IC card is simpler, more reliable, cheaper,
and easier for extending than magnetic card. Simple maintenance.

2.6.4 Distribution System

CTI smart card distribution and management system is specially designed for
pay- TV and digital broadcasting. The special layered smart card distribution and
management is designed according to CAS operations regulars and to ensure
the security of pay-TV. Based on different levels and different uses, the smart
cards will be divided into the mother cards, key cards, system control cards,
terminals users’ cards etc. The data structure and application programs are
different. The whole distribution and management is divided into several layers
including: mother cards distribution and management, system control cards
distribution and management, users’ cards distribution and management. The
smart cards of each layer manage and restrict the distribution work of next layer.

3 SMS module

3.1 System Summary

CTI_CAS SMS module is an integrative operation management platform by
which the operators can provide multi-services to the subscribers. It can send
authorization data to CAS according with the ordering situation of subscribers
and charge meanwhile. Utilizing the bank network characteristic as secrecy,
security and rapid fund circulation etc, it can implement the charging function by
cooperating with bank system and monitor and analysis function through the
interface with bank system.
As the pioneer SMS developed independently in China, CTI_CAS SMS module
already has mature system structure and product module, complies with
EUROCRYPT standard made by European Electronic Standards Committee and
all the standard made by State Admission of Radio, Film and Television.

4.4.6 Bank Management Module
Using fully the bank system technology and the effective, exact and safe devices,
bank management module controls charging, credit and profits distribution.
The subscriber signs contract with the programs providers to reserve some or all
the channels and audience time which is minimally by month. The programs
provider informs the bank monthly to transit the fund from the subscriber’s
account to its own account and sends programs authorization to allow the
subscriber to receiving programs.

4.4.7 Charging Card Management Module
This module supports charging account by charging card, provides a simple
paying mode for the subscribers.

4.4.8 Short Message Management interface
Short message management interface connects with short message payment
module (TVM) of CTI-CAS. The subscribers can query account, charging and

message management module and short message payment module processes

4.4 System Structure

Short message payment module is mainly composed by short message gate way,
WEB server, database server, network management working station and
GSM/CDMA modem.
l Short message gateway: connecting with network, being able to receive and
transfer mobile short message. Connecting external with a Wi-Fi modem
which has 8 interfaces for 8 SIM card. The short message sent by mobile
phone is analyzed according to certain regulars for later balance querying
and account charging functions. The environment for short message gateway
is Windows 2003 server linking externally with GSM modem.

l WEB server: WEB server is a standard website server which provides to the
operators the functions as registering, logging, editing, sending, browsing,
deleting, responding message etc by programmes in background. The site
has background management enter. The administrator can change system
parameters or charging, deleting users, monitoring short message content
etc. The running environment for WEB server is IIS 5.0/Windows 2003
Server.

l Database server: short message and subscribers’ information is normally
stored in database server for surveying and querying etc and also for the
management of subscribers’ account and right. The database server links
effectively short message gateway, WEB server, terminals, CAS and SMS.
Its running environment is Oracle 10g and Window 2003 Server.

l Network management work station: the configuration and management of
subscribers billing/registering, database and gateway; accessing to short
message server to examine stored information. Its main work is system
background management and monitoring. The management work station,
which does not have to run 24h/24h, could help the operators for various

Chapter 5 SI-EPG System

1. Summary

Electronic Program Guide（EPG）is the specific feature of the Digital TV system.
It provides an approach for subscribers which has the advantages of convenient
use、friendly interface and quick access to programs etc. Through the EPG
system, subscribers can clearly know the programs that will be broadcast on all
channels by graphical way. It is equivalent to a dynamic radio and television
newspaper. Moreover, the EPG system provides clear and parti-colored
classification function, which can also help subscribers to view and select various
types of programs.
The key technologies to achieve the EPG system mainly include: the
organization and generation for the SI data at the send end、reception and
analysis for the SI data at the receiver、the establishment of the SI database at
the receiving end、display of the EPG interface and so on. Some of them are
accomplished by hardware, such as reception and analysis for the SI data; some
are carried out by software, such as the establishment of the SI database at the
receiving end and display of the EPG interface.
The EPG system is divided into head-end subsystem and receiving end
subsystem. The head-end subsystem is mainly responsible for the organization
and generation of SI data. Generally, these works are completed by a special SI
generator (SI Generator), the generated SI data, programs and other data-flow is
multiplied in the system layer, then transmitted in the TS stream. Receiving
subsystem is responsible for receiving and displaying the corresponding EPG

information, which can be achieved by the set-top generally.
The products of EPG system mentioned here mainly refer to the electronic
program guide data generation system of head-end, which includes the program
management software and SI server. As for the products of receiving end, the
standard EPG information should be displayed, though it has different forms of
expression according to different set-top boxes.

2. Introduction of product

SI-EPG System provides electronic program guide for digital TV subscribers, so
that the subscribers could find their favorite program concerned conveniently and
rapidly, and look for additional information of programs. It also provides the
operators a high efficiency management platform which carries out automatic
management of producing, editing, censoring, scheduling, uploading and
broadcasting for operators’ management of broadcasting service information.
The Compunicate’s SI- EPG system is one of the most widely applied system in
China.
SI-EPG system adopts transmission device- SI injector, and uses advanced
distributed design which makes the system more secure, simple, ease to operate.
Compunicate SI-EPG is compatible with DVB-SI EN 300 468 standard, with the
natures of standard, openness, compatibility, function scalability.

2.1 Fundamental

The fundamental of the SI-EPG system is showed in figure 2-1，the EPG system
is divided into head-end subsystem and receiving end subsystem. The
information is sent to every householder through other digital television systems
and television transmission network, subscribers receive and watch programs
through the receiving subsystem and choose the programs.

2.1.1 Head-end subsystem for SI-EPG
SI-EPG head-end subsystem is responsible for the organization and
management of programs, its database is not shared with other systems and it
sends data which comply with the DVB SI standard through SI server. According
to the actual situation, it can interconnect with other digital TV systems at
different levels. These digital television systems includes Conditional Access
System (CAS)、Subscriber Management System (SMS)、multiplexers、
scramblers、video servers、gateways and so on. Some digital TV programs is
sent with a certain degree of SI information, if we send out it with no modified, the
receiving end may be confused. Therefore, the programs are generally re-
programmed through the program management software, then unified broadcast.
The way of interconnect can adopt TCP / IP interface, can also use DVB
interface. Specific connections can refer to Figure 2-2 in the example.

2.1.2 SI-EPG receiving end subsystem
SI-EPG receiving end subsystem is in set-top boxes in general, it can achieve
the stacking of programs drawing and SI-EPG interface on the TV screen, the TV
screen that the subscribers can see can be divided into three layers followed by
graphics、video and background layer.

Graphics layer also known as the OSD (On Screen Display) layer, the OSD
interface display technology means superimposing text on the image so that the
screen can provide subscribers with more additional information. Video layer is
the program watching now (the decoded activities of images). Background layer
is screen image when not starting to broadcast programs and the EPG menu.
EPG interface is built on graphic layer, superimposed form many EPG graphic
elements (such as buttons, text box, select buttons, component containers
etc).The status transfer of the interface is achieved by information-driven
mechanism, message processing is done during the news response function.
The screen image that subscribers see is the blend of these three layers.

2.2 System components

The components for Compunicate’s SI-EPG system is the core device (SI Server,
SI injector or ASI output card)， peripheral equipment (EPG record and edit
workstation)， Compunicate SI-EPG system software.

2.2.1 Software architecture
The software of SI-EPG system include Injector Network Management
Software(SI Generator), SI Send Software, SI Editor Software, SI Analysis
Extraction Software, EPG Offline Editing Software, EPG Online Editing Software,
Access Control Management Software and Import Software etc. Software

2.2.1.1 Injector Network Management Software

The Network Management software of injector I201 can remotely set up the IP
addresses of injector、the sending and receiving IP addresses and ports of TS
streams、the output rate and the PID of receiving TS packets etc. The interface

2.2.1.2 SI Analysis Extraction Software

The Compunicate’s SI Analysis Extraction Software can extract SI information
and analyze SI information, for example, it can analyze the NIT, BAT and SDT
table, extracting the valuable data. It also can output part of SI information such
as the information of EIT table directly to the database、XML file or TEXT file.

2.2.1.3 SI Editor Software

Business information editing is used to Configure and modify the business
information of TV station digital video broadcasting (including network information,
business group information, transmission flow information, service information,
time information etc),it can rationally allocate the resources according to different
ID number and description information in business information setting. The
interface adopts the tree structure, using the way of classification menu to show
the whole SI table structure which makes the editing for related SI content
conveniently

2.2.1.4 SI Send Software

SI Send Software can set the migration of PID and the information sending
through
corresponding software modules. It mainly edits the sending parameters of SI
information tables, such as PID, sending multicast port etc. Usually, NIT is only
sent to the designated host frequency point, SDT is sent to respective multiplexer,
TDT/TOD is sent to all the multiplexers.

2.2.1.5 EPG Off-line Editing Software

Playbill off-line editing software is easy and fast to operate, it can add the
program basic information such as program sorting and parental control in the
shortest time, matching up with the national standard character retrieval and
review, it also can edit and verify the content in batch, which Can save the
operator operating time under the premise to satisfy the playbill content greatly
the security to complete the playbill the edition.

2.2.1.6 EPG On-line Editing Software

The powerful On-line Editing Software is used in the entry and editing of
electronic program guide (EPG), that is the entry and editing of digital video
broadcasting playbill, through the visual way, in addition of editing program guide
content, the system can set several standard descriptors to provide the relative
business supporting such as parental control、description of expansion incident
etc. It supports standard program classified information adopting the drop-down
menu which makes the interface operation simple and convenient at a glance.
The powerful review feature ensures the accuracy of the playbill content.

2.2.1.7 Access Control Management Software

The Compunicate’s Access Control Management Software of the SI-EPG system
was installed in the SI server, the main function is to create roles such as system
administrators, examiners, entry members etc and to set up their management
authority, you can set up different management authority separately according to
business, which make the system application more flexible. At the same time, the
system has a detailed log of operation, which makes the responsibility clear and
definite.

2.2.1.8 Importing Software

Importing Software can import playbill with a variety of text formats in batch, it
has review mechanism before importing, the import playbill can re-edit and re-
use, which reduces the workload of staff and strengthens the information-sharing
level. The Compunicate’s SI-EPG system supports playbill importing and
exporting with a variety of formats such as the standard TXT、CHINAEPG

XML、ALTICAST XML、CTI XML and PSC etc, interconnecting with a third party
system conveniently.

2.2.2 Hardware architecture
The hardware architecture of Compunicate’s SI-EPG system is formed by the
core device (SI Server, SI injector or ASI output card) and the peripheral
equipment (EPG record and edit workstation).
There are two types of hardware architectures of the SI-EPG system, which are
the modes of ASI output card and SI injector, subscribers can independently
choose according to their own actual demand. Choosing the first mode,
subscribers need to configure the SI servers installed ASI output card and EPG
entry workstations; the second mode, subscribers need to configure SI server, SI
injector and scalable EPG entry workstation. The structure of SI injector mode is

2.2.2.1 SI Injector

I201 injector is Compunicate's unique owned product; it can satisfy the demand
of flexible application and the stable running for SI-EPG system, injecting
individual information for different multiplexers. It is one of the most important
components of Compunicate’s SI-EPG system..
SI injector has 1 ASI input, which can extract EPG information from TS , carry on
PSI-SI analysis and edit the EPG information according to demands. SI injector
packs the service information and EPG information from IP input into the
standard TS format and then output from its 8 ASI interfaces respectively, not
using ASI expender, in order to make the system simplified. The different stream
from each ASI interface can be transmitted separately to one multiplexer. The
multiplexer receives only the necessary SI information, so there is no need for

PID filtering and mapping by multiplexer. It only needs adding the injector to
expand the channels.

2.2.2.2 SI Server

The SI server of the Compunicate’s SI-EPG system uses mainstream brand
server, and update the server hardware configuration in time to ensure the
stability and security of system.
The SI server is the server installed the Oracle database software and SI
Management Software (SI-Editor, SI-Generator, SI-Send etc.). As the system
database server, SI server is independent and doesn’t share the database with
other systems. Under the condition of no SI injector, SI servers need to be
configured the ASI output card to output the edited EPG information.
SI server's main functions include: SI database、Management of Event
Database (SI-Editor)、SI information configuration (SI-Editor)、the configuration
of SI injector and monitoring (SI-Generator)、sending control and monitoring of
SI-EPG information (SI-Send) etc.

2.2.2.3 EPG Entry Workstation/Censorship Workstation

The EPG Entry Workstation is a computer which installed the client software of
the EPG-Editor and output card's computer，it visits the SI server through
Ethernet and edits EPG information (playbill). Software interface is showed as

2.3 Main functions

The main function of the Compunicate’s SI-EPG system is the allocation and
modification for the business information of TV station digital video broadcasting
(including network information, business group information, transmission flow
information, service information, time information etc); the electronic program
guides (EPG) input and edition, is also the entry and editing playbill of the digital
video broadcasting; sending variety of real-time business information to the SI
injection, then SI injector sends them through the ASI interface to the
multiplexers or video servers, finally shows on the graphics layer (OSD)of
receiving end.
The Compunicate’s SI-EPG system is not only a mature technology product, but
also a system solution plan which can ensure the security of the operators’
operation and broadcasting. The specific plan is showed as follows.
