This document discusses the role of epigenetics in obesity. It defines epigenetics as heritable changes in gene expression that occur without alterations to the DNA sequence, such as DNA methylation and histone modifications. Certain nutritional conditions can dynamically change DNA methylation patterns and histone modifications. The conclusions suggest identifying early in life individuals who may have methylation and acetylation profiles in specific genes linked to metabolic disease risk. A personalized supplemented diet or epigenetic drugs could potentially counter these profiles and help with preconception counseling.
