SOCIAL
SELF?
THE SELF
SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
Self as a product of Social Interaction
The self is a resulting product of the
social interactions of a man. The
person’s ‘self’ is dependent on the
things which happened to him / her in
life, which includes interaction with
others.

Charles Cooley’s
Looking-glass self. Cooley said
that we base our image on
what we think other people
see.

05
George Herbert Mead
said that the self is a person’s
distinct identity and it is
developed through social
interactions. Mead said that an
individual has to be able to
view himself or herself through
the eyes of others.
