Reflection – Plant your Word in Rich Soil
The young man Eric was giving testimony to the turnaround in his life since he
accepted Jesus as his Lord and Saviour. Two years before, he confessed, he had no
appetite for the Word of God. On Sundays he used to shop round the neighbourhood
churches for the priest that gave the shortest homilies. His idea of a good church
service was one that took as little time as possible. The shorter the better. But now
that he is renewed in faith he could sit down and listen to the preaching of God’s word
for hours on end. Our disposition for the Word of God is a good indication of our
relationship with the Lord. Today’s Gospel is an invitation to review and renew our
attitude to the word of God

Garland Weekend – A Short History
The Christian Faith was zealously adopted by the people of the fifth and subsequent centuries.
Tobernalt continued to be a communal assembly place. The Lughanasa festival was
Christianised and came to be called Garland Sunday, which nowadays falls on the last Sunday
in July. Christianity inserted a strong penitential and sacrificial practice into Garland Sunday
observance from the beginning but the communal revelry was not rejected. In this manner, the
tradition of the Garland Sunday Patron Day was begun.
Tobernalt is not unique in celebrating Garland Sunday as a Patron or Pattern day. Other wells
share in the tradition which highlights the underpinning of the Garland Patron by the pre-
Christian Celtic celebration of the Lughanasa festival. The traditional order of prayer and
penance followed by entertainment and revelry was common to all locations. The Pattern
ceremonies extended to adjoining churches and cemeteries
where such existed.
Garland Sunday at Tobernalt has often been misnamed Garlic
Sunday. The garlic plant thrives around Tobernalt in Summer
time, and its pungent scent leaves the pilgrim in no doubt about
its presence. The significance of garland is to be found in the
decoration of the Holy Well surroundings with flowers, a
tradition which has endured to the present time. (See Garland
Weekend Programme in our Newsletter)
