2. Shot 1 – Low angle, medium long shot – 0:04 – This shot of the band coming out of
a stage door and walking towards the camera immediately introduces the band to
the audience. The colour palette used in this shot has hints of yellow and brown
which creates a cozy/autumnal feel, this suggests the stage is their comfort zone.
However, as the shot continues we see the band exit the venue into a grey
alleyway, which shows them exiting their “comfort zone”.
3. Shot 2 - Medium shot – 0:20 – This shot introduces a CGI alien character which
features throughout the music video. This is a visual metaphor for the lead
singer’s love for his girlfriend as we see at the end of the video that when the
band is in the place “only they know” the creatures heart starts to glow.
4. Shot 3 – Medium close up – This shot both sets the scene of the rest of the video
by bringing in the location and continues with the autumnal feel in the mise-en-
scene. The leaves on the drums and the tarnished look of the kit also suggests that
the instruments are unused and so the place only they know is not visited
frequently; a place only visited when their relationship is in trouble, as suggested
in the lyrics “this could be the end of everything”. The significance of the place is
that it rekindles their love for one another.
5. Shot 4 – Extreme long shot – The waterfall in this shot suggests quite a relaxed,
romantic feel to the location which links to the lyrics ‘Somewhere only we know’
as a place of love and romance for the lead singer. Also in this shot, the time of
day in the video superimposes from day to night and this ellipsis suggests that
the spend a lot of time in this place.
6. Shot 5 – Long shot – In this shot we finally see the image of the full band
performing in the final location of the video. This produces audience
gratification as it’s a young male band and the female audience would expect to
see meat shots of the band.
7. Shot 6 - Long shot – This shot of the band exiting a London cab suggests
that they are city boys and are being taken out of their natural
environment, which links with them exiting the venue at the start of the
video. As the video progresses they get more and more out of their
normal environment. They are also not in suitable clothing/using a
suitable car for the environment they are in, reinforcing the fish-out-of-
water syndrome.
8. Shot 7 – Long shot- This keeps up the metaphor of the little creatures being
a visual representation of the lead singer’s love, but in this case they are
the couple’s doubts and so every time the couple go to this place with any
doubts of their relationship they are worked out and the doubt is left
behind.
9. Shot 8 – Close up – This close up again fulfills audience gratification by
showing meat shots of the lead singers face. This relates to Jason Mittell’s
theory that industries use genre to sell products to audiences.
10. Shot 9 – Medium shot – This is the final shot of the representation of love and
doubt. It shows that the doubts have been worked out after visiting their place
and love has been fully restored in their relationship.
