- The shanghai earthquake reported via twitter within minutes The old model is no longer valid Media used to “mediate” between events and people Editors would decide “newsworthy” topics Events sized to fit within print or broadcast lengths New model Everyone can be a journalist No barrier to entry Journalism happens as a side-effect of network amplification news organizations have embraced Twitter as part of their communications arsenal Virtual proximity to people of their choice empowers twitter users Non-localized proximity: users are watching TV and communicating on Twitter about the programs in realtime creating non-localized proximity a virtual proximity rather than a geographical proximity
- With Twitter the importance of physical proximity is reduced users to build networks of affiliation that are wider than Facebook Twitter reduces the power barrier between individuals Members of congress are tweeting real-time to their consitutients from the floor of the house it creates a platform for open social discourse that bridges physical and power distance These loose ties afforded by Twitter ensure individuals can access broader networks separate to those afforded by physical proximity The asynchronous nature of Twitter based interactions facilitates the development of weak ties Aware of larger aspects of the world Broader networks of affiliation enabled by these factors
