- To market yourself to employers, you must have a strong resume. Morehead State University Career Services is hear to help you! I’m Megan Boone, one of the career counselors, in the office. Today you will learn some tips for building a strong resume.
- You must understand the purpose of a resume as a resume should highlight your most relevant skills not list every job that you’ve ever had. You need to show that you can impact the employer’s bottomline or mission in a positive manner.
- This is a list of just some of the sections that you might want to have on your resume. Pick and choose and include what will sell you the best to a potential employer. You may have strong extracurricular involvement so you’ll want a section dedicated to that but your friend might have great work experience in the field and list that as the first section in his/her resume.
- Contact information can speak volumes about you. You must have a professional email address and a professional voicemail on your phone.
- Objectives are a way to indicate your career goals as they related to the employer or the industry. Most employers prefer specific objectives.
- Education is what you have to sell now that you are earning a degree from MSU. This is some of the information that you may want to include in this section.
- When writing a resume, it is important that it is easy to read. Employers will quickly scan it to determine if you will be given an interview. This is one way to format your education.
- Including a skills section is a nice way to highlight some of the most relevant experience that you bring to the job or internship. You can include skills gained in your classes as well as on the job.
- Think broadly when building your experience section. It does not have to be paid work. Typically your most recent experience will be listed first with the details.
- Be sure to use action words to describe what you did – managed, lead, trained, designed are all great action words.
- Activities can be a great way to showcase additional skills especially if you don’t yet have work experience in the field. Many employers are seeking candidates with strong teamwork and communication skills which are often gained through activities whether on-campus organizationgs, volunteer, or church related.
- You might set up the activities section as you do your experience section. Don’t sell yourself short.
