3 traits indicate an employee’s ability to do a job, and each reveals different employee qualities. > Many companies use personality and skill tests in the hiring process . > Personality: most difficult-to-change w/o psychotherapy > Moving up the pyramid, skills are more easily and directly trained - because foundational skills provide the basis upon which job-specific kills can be built. > FTR skills are the skills needed to some degree in every job - skills such as reading, writing & math. Effective employee development starts with selecting employees who have foundational skills that can be built upon . > Selecting employees based on both personality fit and skill-development potential results in a higher level of job performance, employee satisfaction, and organizational productivity. > Foundational skill are often overlooked in the selection process, mostly because businesses assume if an individual has a diploma or a certain set of courses on one’s resume, that person has requisite skills. That is a dangerous assumption that can lead to expensive “false-positive” hires.
This chart shows the relationship between certificate level and median annual salaries within the U.S., according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It’s not difficult here to see the link between skills and prosperity.
