Individual Activity no.1
WHAT’S YOUR HOBBY?
What is your
hobby?
Sir Isaac Newton
Laws of Motion
November 2011
I. Objectives
 At the end of the sessions, the
learners are expected to:
Explain each of Newton’s three
laws of motion. S11/12PS-Ivd-50
Vocabulary
 1. Friction- a force that opposes motion
between 2 objects that are touching
 2. Inertia-tendency of all objects to stay at
rest or in motion
 3. Mass- the amount of matter an object is
made of
 4. Force-a push or a pull, all forces have size
and direction
Newtown’s 1st Law of Motion
“Law of Inertia”
 An object at rest remains at rest and an
object in motion remains in motion at
constant speed and in a straight line
unless acted on by an unbalanced
force
Balanced Force and Unbalanced
Force
Picture A:
Equal forces in opposite directions
produce no motion
Picture B:
Unequal opposing forces produce an
unbalanced force causing motion
It meansthat…
This is called INERTIA
An object in motion wants to
stay in motion, and an object
at rest wants to stay at rest
wants to stay at rest.
Examples of Newton’s 1st Law of
Motion
 1. Unless acted upon
by an unbalanced force,
this golf ball would sit
on the tee forever.
 2. A book sliding across
a table slows down and
stops because of the
force of friction.
Learner will be called to imitate the video clip
presented by the teacher but will do it the
other way around. You will do the opposite.
You will act is if there’s friction or none based
on the video
that will be presented to you. Learner who
will participate will be given reward.
Group Activity No.1
ITS YOUR TIME TO
SHINE!(10mins.)
It Your Turn To Shine!
Group 1-1st Law of Motion
 If there’s friction…
?
 If there’s no
friction…
It Your Turn To Shine!
 If there’s friction…  If there’s no
friction…
?
Newton’s Second Law of Motion
“F=mxa”
 The acceleration of an object depends
on the mass of the object and the
amount of the force applied
Newton’s Second Law of Motion
 1. Force = mass x acceleration F=m x a
 2. Force- a push or pull, all forces have size
and direction
 3. Mass- the amount of matter an object is
made of
 4. Acceleration-the rate at which velocity
changes; and object accelerates if its speed
changes, if its direction changes and if both
speed and direction changes
Examples of Newton’s 2nd Law
In Team Sport…
 1. Hitting a softball,the harder the
hit, the faster the ball goes
 2. Loaded versus an
unloaded truck
In Transportation…
 3. Loaded versus an
unloaded truck
ITS YOUR TIME TO SHINE!
Group 2- 2ND Law
 The learners will come in front and
push a 2 trucks one at a time. He/She
will apply same force on both truck then
will explain the relationship of the mass
and force to the truck’s acceleration
Truck A is loaded
Truck B is unloaded
Newton’s Third Law of Motion
“Action-Reaction”
 1. For every force, there is an equal
and opposite force
 2. Action and Reaction
Examples of Newton’s 3rd Law
 1. 2 cars hit head on head
 2. Gun firing: when someone fire gun
the reaction force push the gun
backward.
 3. Jumping to land from boat: the action
force applied on the boat and the
reaction force push you to land. The
action force push the boat backward.
ITS YOUR TIME TO SHINE!
Group 3- 3rd Law
Question: Which action from the video is the
example for the 3rd Law of Motion?
Group Activity no. 2
Concept Map!(10mins)
Words to be used in making concept map…
Newton’s First Law, Objects at rest stay at
rest, Newton’s Second Law, Unless acted on
by an unbalanced force, Expressed as F=ma,
More force means more acceleration, More
mass means less acceleration, If an object
exerts a force on another object, The 2nd
object exerts equal and opposite force on the
1st object, Newton’s Third Law, Expressed
as F=ma, Known as Action-Reaction, Moving
objects keep moving
Group Activity no. 3
Role Playing(11mins.)
 Each of the group are tasked to think of
an example of the Law of Motion then
will role play it afterwards. The group
has 5mins. to prepare then 2mins. to
role play.
Point for Reflection(2mins.)
 Now that you already knew the 3 Laws
of Motion, what would you do if you
have a 83 year old grandmother at
home and your floor is very slippery
because of applying floorwax weekly
and scrubbing it daily? Why?
Let’s Sum It Up!
 Newton’s First Law of Motion states
that:________________________
 Newton’s Second Law of Motion states
that:________________________
 Newton’s Third Law of
Motion:______________________
ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY
 INSTRUCTION: Each of the items below is best
represented by one of the Newton’s Law of
Motion. Write a 1, 2, or 3 for each of the
following to indicate whether it’s Newton’s 1st,
2nd, or 3rd law. Write your answer on the
space provided.
 1. _________ A climber pulls down on a rope
causing his body to lift upward and rise along
the rope.
 2. ____________ Force = mxa
 3. ____________ Two bumper cars collide
into each other and each car jolts backward.
 4. ____________ When you give your friend
a lift on your bike you have to pedal harder
and faster to keep the same
speed(acceleration) as you had when you
were on your bike alone.
 5. ____________ For every action there is
an equal and opposite reaction.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY
Assignment
 What is inertia?
 Describe how mass and inertia are
related.
 How does mass affect acceleration?
 Which law is associated with inertia?
 What causes an object to slowdown or
speed-up?
THE END…

  • 16. Newton’s Second Law of Motion  1. Force = mass x acceleration F=m x a  2. Force- a push or pull, all forces have size and direction  3. Mass- the amount of matter an object is made of  4. Acceleration-the rate at which velocity changes; and object accelerates if its speed changes, if its direction changes and if both speed and direction changes
  • 17. Examples of Newton’s 2nd Law In Team Sport…  1. Hitting a softball, the harder the hit, the faster the ball goes  2. Loaded versus an unloaded truck
  • 18. In Transportation…  3. Loaded versus an unloaded truck
  • 19. ITS YOUR TIME TO SHINE! Group 2- 2ND Law  The learners will come in front and push a 2 trucks one at a time. He/She will apply same force on both truck then will explain the relationship of the mass and force to the truck’s acceleration Truck A is loaded Truck B is unloaded
  • 20. Newton’s Third Law of Motion “Action-Reaction”  1. For every force, there is an equal and opposite force  2. Action and Reaction
  • 21. Examples of Newton’s 3rd Law  1. 2 cars hit head on head
  • 22.  2. Gun firing: when someone fire gun the reaction force push the gun backward.
  • 23.  3. Jumping to land from boat: the action force applied on the boat and the reaction force push you to land. The action force push the boat backward.
  • 24. ITS YOUR TIME TO SHINE! Group 3- 3rd Law Question: Which action from the video is the example for the 3rd Law of Motion?
  • 25. Group Activity no. 2 Concept Map!(10mins) Words to be used in making concept map… Newton’s First Law, Objects at rest stay at rest, Newton’s Second Law, Unless acted on by an unbalanced force, Expressed as F=ma, More force means more acceleration, More mass means less acceleration, If an object exerts a force on another object, The 2nd object exerts equal and opposite force on the 1st object, Newton’s Third Law, Expressed as F=ma, Known as Action-Reaction, Moving objects keep moving
  • 26. Group Activity no. 3 Role Playing(11mins.)  Each of the group are tasked to think of an example of the Law of Motion then will role play it afterwards. The group has 5mins. to prepare then 2mins. to role play.
  • 27. Point for Reflection(2mins.)  Now that you already knew the 3 Laws of Motion, what would you do if you have a 83 year old grandmother at home and your floor is very slippery because of applying floorwax weekly and scrubbing it daily? Why?
  • 28. Let’s Sum It Up!  Newton’s First Law of Motion states that:________________________  Newton’s Second Law of Motion states that:________________________  Newton’s Third Law of Motion:______________________
