1. Hot Spots in China's Sweetener Industry in 2014
China is an important production area of high intensity sweeteners (HIS) in the world, exporting
over 60.0% of its output in 2013. In 2013, more than 1.4 million tonnes of sweeteners were
exported abroad.
In 2014, China’s sweetener industry has maintained slight growth. Most products face serious
excess capacity, raw material prices have been rising, while corporate profitability has been
declining. Under these circumstances, enterprises vigorously explore overseas market and
e-business to ensure their survival.
On 6 Jan. 2014, Shandong Bailong Chuangyuan Bio-tech Co., Ltd. released an announcement that
its three products — isomalto oligosaccharide, fructo oligosaccharide and maltitol, have passed
the Non-GMO Identity Preserved Compliance Verification by SGS-CSTC Standards Technical
Services Co., Ltd., which is the world's leading inspection, verification, testing and certification
company. Thanks to passing the Non-GMO Verification, Shandong Bailong has paid more
attention to its export business in 2014, in order to develop a new market.
On 10 May, 2014, Shandong Longlive Bio-technology Co., Ltd. opened an online flagship store at
yhd.com, a large business-to-consumer e-commerce platform in China. The store is mainly
engaged in sales of end-products, including soybean milk powder that contains
xylo-oligosaccharide and vinegar drink, which contains XOS as well as xylitol. The yhd.com
website is the second B2C platform in China that Longlive Bio-technology has penetrated into,
after the first flagship store launched at Tmall.com in Dec. 2013.
In June 2014, China implemented Food Safety Standards on neotame, which has already issued at
the end of 2013. Besides, neotame's patent that belonged to the NutraSweet Company expired
at the end of 2013, which enabled more enterprises to enter the neotame market. By far, several
enterprises have owned the techniques to produce neotame, and even some beverage
enterprises adopted neotame to develop their own products. For example, a 200 t/a neotame
project of Shandong Benyue Biological Technology Co., Ltd. passed the Environmental Impact
Assessment in Aug. 2014; another 1,000 t/a neotame project of Wuhan HuaSweet Co., Ltd. was
put into production in Nov. 2014, which made it become the largest neotame producer in China.

2. China is an important production area of high intensity sweeteners (HIS) in the world, exporting
over 60.0% of its output in 2013. After experiencing the depression brought by the impact of
2008 global financial crisis, HIS production in China has gradually recovered since H2 2009.
Compared with 2010, some kinds of HIS such as sucralose saw a great rise in output, while some
varieties witness reversed changes, like stevia sweetener.
Asia Pacific, with China, India and Indonesia, ranking first, second and fourth in terms of
population worldwide located in this region, is an important consumption region of HIS in the
world, taking up about 50% by consumption in the global market. It is much more important as a
supplier, providing more than 80% of the world's HIS output.
In 2013, the sweetener industry in China witnesses ups and downs throughout its development.
The sweetener industry produced a total of more than 13 million tonnes of sweeteners in 2013,
increasing by about 8% than that of 2012, while sugar alcohol and functional oligosaccharides
developed quickly and HIS and starch sugardeveloped relatively slowly.
As for the import and export, in 2013, more than 1.4 million tonnes of sweeteners were exported
abroad. Starch sugar products are the major exported sweeteners in China and their export
volume accounted for more than 85% of the total in 2013. Similar to the export of sweetener, the
import volume of starch sugar accounted for more than 90% of the totalimport volume in 2013.
China is playing an important role in the global sweetener market at present. With the growing
demand from downstream industries, sweetener industry in China has entered a rapid
development stage in recent years. The output of sweetener products increased to about 13.5
million tonnes in 2013, increasing by about 8% than that of 2012, while sugar alcohol and
functional oligosaccharides developed quickly and HIS and starch sugar developed relatively
slowly.
With the fast development of economic and society in China, people’s request of improving the
life quality and healthy standard becomes higher. People’s life style and dietary constituents has
been changed, so did the demand structure of sweetener in downstream industries such as food
industry and pharmaceuticals.
In terms of upstream industries, the sufficient raw materials have kept the healthy development
of sweetener industry in China. Most of the major raw materials of sweetener are abundant in
China except soybean and L-phenylalanine. What’s more the price of major raw materials also
the main influence factorfor the production of sweetener industry.
