Diving head first into a mobile learning project without understanding the relevant pedagogy, technologies, faculty, and students could spell disaster for those who attempt. Having been involved with various mobile learning, training, and course development projects, the presenter will share his successes as well as setbacks, and offer practical suggestions for those considering mobile learning. The presentation focus will cover a theoretical framework of mobile learning that was developed to situate and guide the development and support of such initiatives. Topics to be covered include: faculty training for mobile teaching and learning, common misconceptions, and easy to implement ideas that may increase access for rural, military, and digital divide students.

Assignment: Living+ is an exploration into possibilities for the integration of complementary functions and housing. In a 40x40x40m volume the designer is triggered to develop new dwelling typologies through the mixing of functions. Concept: Rather than cloakrooms the dwellings themselves should be the filter between the public domain and the sport domain. By positioning itself in the middle, the dwelling has new border conditions as an interface to both the public as well as the sports domain. This makes the program of the dwelling dependent of its adjecent domain so that new typologies arise: 'arena', 'stand', 'club' and 'window'. Subtile transitions between the functions are made through order of the intensity of an activity. This is also expressed in the routing and the facade - in the spacing of the vertical louvres. The program itself is reflected in the materialization of the interior and the facade. This project was designed as educational project within the Architecture, Urbanism & Building Sciences master program (1st semester) at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). Team: Björn Fries, Daan Font Freide, Jasper Moelker

Washington State University Team Mentoring Program To meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population, WSU launched the Team Mentoring Program (TMP) in 2007 to increase participation, persistence, achievement, and graduation of underrepresented minority students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math. Students are connected to a multifaceted support system that includes upper-level students, faculty members, and program staff. TMP offers activities intended to strengthen connection to colleges; facilitate student success; increase STEM retention and graduation rates; and direct the student toward graduate / professional schools or leadership in the workforce. The comprehensive mentoring strategy has several focused tracks that, together, address many of the challenges that may cause attrition. These tracks include academic support; internship resources and professional development; undergraduate research opportunities; cultural understanding; and community-building. Scholarship support provided by the University and by corporate donors including AT&T and Boeing enable these activities. J. Manual Acevedo, Director of Multicultural Student Services, Washington State University Arnikan Baleswaran, Student, Washington State University

Please join the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) on Tuesday, June 11, 10:00 am (PDT) for a webinar on Competency-based learning and OER. Competency-based learning is gaining traction as institutions strive to personalize learning experiences and decrease time to graduation. Students demonstrate mastery at their own pace through e-Portfolio assessments or on-demand tests and institutions often recommend free or open educational resources (OER) along with prior learning as a source for learning materials. Hear from several higher education experts on how OER and open courses complement competency-based learning to improve student outcomes: Dr. Ellen Marie Murphy, Executive Director of Curriculum and Learning Systems, Ivy Bridge College. Ivy Bridge College is a two-year online institution that streamlines the transfer process to four-year degrees through personalized learning programs. Dr. Chari Leader-Kelley, Vice-President of Learning Counts at the Council for Adult & Experiential Learning (CAEL). Learning Counts specializes in the assessment of prior learning for college credit. Currently working with the Saylor foundation to embed portfolio templates into open courses to allow students to demonstrate and reflect upon their learning. Dr. David Shulman, Vice-President of the Virtual Campus and Instructional Technology at Broward College, Florida. Broward College is offering a competency-based MOOC this summer entitled “College Foundations: Reading, Writing, and Math” to provide students with skills to begin college or to prepare for college placement exams. Participant Login Information: There is no need to register in advance but please use the link below on the day of the webinar. You may use a headset or dial-in over the phone if you would like to speak otherwise you can listen directly from your computer speakers and use the chat window.

Program code examples (known also as worked examples) play a crucial role in learning how to program. Instructors use examples extensively to demonstrate the semantics of the programming language being taught and to highlight the fundamental coding patterns. Programming textbooks allocate considerable space to present and explain code examples. To make the process of studying code examples more interactive, CS education researchers developed a range of tools to engage students in the study of code examples. These tools include codecasts (codemotion, codecast, elicasts), interactive example explorers (WebEx, PCEX), and tutoring systems (DeepTutor). An important component in all types of worked examples is code explanations associated with specific code lines or code chunks of an example. The explanations connect examples with general programming knowledge explaining the role and function of code fragments or their behavior. In textbooks, these explanations are usually presented as comments in the code or as explanations on the margins. The example explorer tools allow students to examine these explanations interactively. Tutoring systems, which engage students in explaining the code, use these model explanations to check student responses and provide scaffolding. In all these cases, to make a worked example re-usable beyond its presentation in a lecture, the explanations have to be authored by instructors or domain experts i.e., produced and integrated into a specific system. As the experience of the last 10 years demonstrated, these explanations are hard to obtain. Those already collected are usually “locked” in a specific example-focused system and can’t be reused. The purpose of this working group is to support broader re-used of worked examples augmented with explanations. Our current plan is to develop а standard approach to represent explained examples. This approach will enable an example created for any of the existing systems to be explored in a standard format and imported into any other example-focused system. We plan to follow a successful experience of the PEML working group focused on re-using programming exercises.

Sales margin plays a crucial role in the corporate world as a compass that directs enterprises towards profitability. It is the discrepancy between a good or service's selling price and its production or acquisition costs. This margin shows a company's capacity to produce income in addition to how well it manages expenses.
