“Digital Revolution: Transforming the Way Work”
Introduction
Digitisation which is the cornerstone of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (also known as Industry 4.0) has an impact on
all organisations across various sectors or industries. In each case, the impact is a different one which makes it essential
for companies and their leaders to have a good understanding and view of what they face and how digitisation will affect
their company: which opportunities can be seized and which threats have to be faced?
The digital revolution is catching up to the life insurance industry as in the next few years, digital tools such as Artificial
Intelligence (AI), Big Data and Advanced Analytics will enable a wide range of new business applications by collecting,
analysing and operationalising vast amounts of data for improved marketing, underwriting, and customer retention.
Technology is only one part of the digital transformation package currently facing insurers, and probably the easier bit.
To accelerate your business by embracing digital, leaders need to drive a shift in corporate culture that aligns behaviors,
organisational structures and processes with technology – and understand the impact this will have on their customers.
The Impact of Digital Revolution’s on AIA and others in the life insurance industry
Leading insurance companies will thrive in this 'new' normal by digitally enabling their sales forces, interacting with
consumers and intermediaries in real-time omnichannel environments and offering remote and robo-advice at any hour
on any platform. The digital disruption has resulted in “InsurTechs” akin to “Fintechs” in the banking and financial
services industries.
The transition from legacy to digital will require a new form of transformational leadership and a whole new philosophy
around the implementation of change. Insurers need to embrace bold change. The Agency sales force and the leaders
would have to rethink the way business is being managed in this ‘new’ normal and reexamine how to transform the
business. The reality is that digital change would affect almost every aspect of an insurer’s business, from customer
offerings to internal processes. The following are some approaches for consideration:
1) Changing the Channel: This prompts insurers to rethink the importance of brand, advertising, and agents
(particularly captive agents) in their go-to-market strategies.
2) ‘New’ Differentiators: As underwriting is no longer a key differentiator, some firms would focus on customer
service and scale. The organisation may pursue professional planning and not just single product value
propositions, engage the customers so they remain loyal and constantly review their status to bridge the gaps.
3) High Tech – High Touch: While leveraging on digital tools such as AI, Big Data and Robotics in the sales
process, the leaders should maintain the personal touch in leading and engaging the team.
4) Learning Organisation/Agility: Life insurance firms should transform into learning organisations where the
leaders demonstrate learning agility in how they learn, unlearn and relearn in today disruptive world.
