Lessons learned about how to find and interview
potential customers
How was our experience with: prepare the video, planning/coordinate the
work with your team, organize the interviews, interview youngers, ... ?
Preparing the video requires resources and time. And, the video requires that
we are trained and prepared to interview people.
It is necessary to plan the interviews in advance or with more time (not only 1
week or minus) so as not to be in a hurry. Work in few days (each one of the
assignments require 1 week to plan and to execute the assignment) is
complicated to prepare interviews, select adequate questions, select people,
etc.
• We have jobs and other duties / labors and devote a few hours to the
course. It is important a common agenda with the time dedication of each
one of the members.
• Interviewing people required more hours than expected. Apart, in our
case, we needed authorizations of father/mother of the youngers and this
task take time.
• In our case 2 members were with other duties in your work, and 1
member was operated.
However, the coordination of the task team has been, as always, easy and
effective, in my opinion, despite the short time available to perform the tasks
during the week. The experience was an interesting virtual collaboration.
We organized our work in Pack (as work package) as we shown.

The work Package was worked in thread / forums:

We suggest define task, packages and assign responsible.
We made interviews from young from our local contact networks: young from
our families (from 16-25 years old), young people of the colleges were we work
(from 16-18 years old), of students from universities were we work or were we
maintain contacts with teachers (from 19 to 25 years old) . But, the most
important was to contact young people from several countries.
The interview must be prepared with well-selected questions. All the team must
collaborate. In our case we did not have time to obtain the authorizations of
parents of young people, and the students did not authorized to publish their
face. Young people were timid or shy. We need take time to prepare them.
The experience was a bit uncomfortable because, by one side, we make the
questions and hold the camera so at the same time, and, we decide to record
only the voice. Apart, in the videos, we had not show the face of the youngers
because we don’t had authorizations from the fathers/mothers. In the last case,
the camera must be prepared to not record faces.
In the online interview we diffuse the URL among contacts. The process was
efficient. The data obtained in the online interview data allowed triangular
interviews face-to-face (video or recordings). This allowed better analyze the
results.

How do we live the experience?
The experience to participate in this task we consider as very positive.
Interview and contact young people from several countries was amazing. So,
the idea has everything to be implemented in several countries, with very
positive results and, more important still, useful solving a huge problem.
In general we enjoyed this task and we think it is essential for the process of
implementing an idea as to what we are working on edu4change4development.

Assignment for the students of the class next time to
help them learn how to interview potential customers
You must coordinate your work with other members of the team. The people
interviewed should respond to appropriate samples and variations or
subgroups.
You are required to interview an entrepreneur for approximately 40 minutes in a
face-to-face interview. You have already developed your questions (plus 1) per
last week’s assignment.
For the final report on the entrepreneur interview prepare a 1.5 page executive
summary (single-spaced, 12-font, Times New Roman) that will discuss the
major findings of your interview. This does not mean that you need to discuss
all the questions that you asked, rather it means those aspects that you found
the most interesting.
You may use some of the concepts that we discussed in the course to highlight
some of the factors that you learned in your interview. This is not required but
rather suggested. You may also discuss aspects that the entrepreneur did not
mentioned that you might have expected to they would have discussed in your
analysis of the interview.
Beyond the Executive Summary, you are required to show your interview notes
relative to each question. These can be in note format. However, they need to
be extensive enough to indicate the work that you performed. This would be
best accomplished by producing all the answers the entrepreneur gave you to
your questions.
The use of a recording device is highly recommended. This recording will help
you develop your notes and the executive summary.

How interview:
- Planning the time, the week is very short. Know the time to interview and
to work in the task of the assignments of the members of the team.
- Check the questions to be used. Ask you: Do you understand the
questions?
- Check the authorizations to interview people. This task takes time.
- Prepare before the interview.
o Book in advance the interview and tell the approximate time it will
take (say within 20 minutes because people are very busy and
often even take longer, especially if they are talking about his life).
§ Test before with someone you trust.
§ Measure the time it will take the interview.
§ You record yourself interviewing.
§ Try/test the camera, light, positions, energy (have
batteries), etc.
o Get notebook, 3 pencils, profiles of the interviewed, etc.
o Get site where interview, with authorizations, time, etc.
- During the interview:
o Listening
o Watch
o Be polite
o Dress correctly
o Know the subject well and bring the interview questions prepared.
o Empathize with the people.
o Recorded on video or audio record the interview
o Arrive 5-10 minutes before the interview
o Record data of interview (start timing, final timing, incidents, etc.)
- After interview
o Write/translate the interview.
o Review the record, video and your notes.
o Resume experience and interview, take notes post experience,
etc.
o Make copies of videos and recordings.
- Note:
o Record your thoughts and ideas
o Having online interview format to enter transcripts of the
recordings and videos.
o Use the interview to get more data online and reach customer

Did you learned something from these conversations or
were just doing them to "reconfirm" what you already
believed
We used a set of internal questions to collect our experience and learning.

Follow, the answer from our team members:
Which is the context to introduce our solution?
1. General secondary education and vocational and university education,
but believes that in Portugal would be better that the target audience was
the secondary vocational education and higher education students,
because they are closer and more motivated to get work. In addition to
students, young workers participate makes sense to want to change their
lives and improve the same.
2. Our solution can help young entrepreneurs to gain the skills to establish
a business. In that sense, the projects is a key tool to achieve that goal. It
is through internet, so it can reach many people around the world. There
aren't sites like this one so its value proposition has a superior position.
3. We are a team from Stanford online courses. We are aiming to create
one new product related education. All information you provide in this
interview will not be disclosed.
Are we detect actual solutions? What are the feelings in our customers
about the possible actual solutions?
1. I think the teaching of entrepreneurship in young people is essential in
this global context, so I think we are working on an existing problem. I
also believe that young people in Portugal (at least) do not yet have
much awareness about the need to acquire entrepreneurial skills to face
the future and such, in my opinion, should be part of the curriculum. I

think the projects teach a variety of solutions because it is a fact that
society needs more entrepreneurs who create more jobs. It involves
many thins for example: low wages, to be independent, to be self-
directed, to fulfill a personal mission in life, etc. I noticed that many
people still use Internet for basic functions, such a s looking for some
articles in Google for a homework. But many have not used the Web to
do something else. Apart from that, many people think of a business a
having a "store". So the possibilities of the own of business are very
narrow (just something that can be transported and sold to someone).
These ideas are very basic but it's what I found. Some others, think that
studying on the Internet is not as effective as going to a school.
2. However, I strongly think that if we define (or polish, redefine, specify)
our niche, this idea can make wonders. The reason is that I know there
are many people who don't have any hope at their correct jobs and they
are eager to do something else but they can't find a reliable source to
grow as entrepreneurs.
3. Yes. The actual solution have some pros and cons.
What are the feeling in our customers about our proposal/solution ?
1. Find interesting the online platform and the concept of it, but the pay
raises some many different answers. Essentially consider that recognize
that the platform is an asset then it should be paid, but with values
appropriate to their age, since they didn't work yet. Be very important to
highlight the possibility that platform to provide the opportunity to meet
with other young people in global network of young entrepreneurs to
collaborate, learn, interchange ideas or experiences, and work mutually
and provide counseling or mentoring services.
2. Most of the interviewees welcome the proposal although they also
mentions that they are not familiar working or studying on line. When
asked about the price they would be able to pay, some were cautions
and said that they preferred to see the price and then consider it. That
happens because they haven't seen anything like that before so they
don't have any reference as to the price.
3. They love it.
Where he/she study, Know about the theme of entrepreneurship ?
1. All respondents studying in Lisbon, Portugal. The respondents do not
know almost anything about entrepreneurship. Only a few participated in
an initiative on entrepreneurship in school performing some tasks.
2. The family and school are the main sources. They admitted not
searching for information related to entrepreneurship.

3. Youth organizations (http://enactus.org/, https://www.aiesec.org/)
Reconfirm or not
o We reconfirm that
o Entrepreneurship is a very heard but not known what it is.
o Entrepreneurship is confused with the creation of a
company. o Online training is not as common in young people.
o Young people think start a business, but do not know what is,
what, etc..
o Is valued more free training/free courses as MOOC.
o It is important to have a consulting service for new entrepreneurs.
o It is important global experiences as MOOC courses
o We re-consider:
o Training should focus on people who are Internet users.
