News and Noteworthy Articles Chosen and Shared by You
Presented by : Chad Jerkins
What It Is
Information exchange is a hallmark of social networking. It is with this in
mind that Scoop.it is designed. Scoop.it allows for the collection as well as
distribution of articles from across the internet, keeping users informed
and helping them share their findings with others.
• Allows users to curate by areas of interest.
• Allows uses to search and view 100’s of articles.
• Post on the articles you select into the interest area of your choosing.
• Share articles with other Scoop.it users.
• Connect with users based on selected articles.
• Keep up to date and spark conversations with others based on the
articles you post, share, and curate.
Getting Started
Getting started with Scoop.it offers many
options, but for the purpose of this
presentation we will look at the free version.
There are two ways to login to Scoop.it. One
will require you to connect via Facebook if
you are a current member of that service.
This process will allow you use preexisting
information on your Facebook profile to
access the services offered by Scoop.it. This
login method will also automatically post
activity on Scoop.it to your Facebook page.
The second method is slightly more involved,
but allows you to set up custom preferences
during the creation of your account.
Step 1:
Click join!
Step 2:
Login via Facebook or
Twitter. You can also login
while bypassing these
services . The next few
steps will explain this
process.
Step 3:
Fill out all information!
Creating Your Account
Step 4:
Connect any social networking sites
you currently use. These are limited
to Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn
when using the free version of
Scoop.it.
Step 5:
Look at the simple tutorial for
”curating” your new Scoop.it
profile.
Step 6:
Create your new topic
subheading. Use key words
to help guide searches that
will lead you to the articles
you are looking for.
Creating Your Account
Glossary
These are words that you will need to
understand in order to get the most out of
your Scoop.it experience:
• Curate- Adding content to your page, usually
based off keywords that you have listed in your
searches. A curated section, or topic, will have a
title of your choosing.
• Scoop- The act of adding content from lists of
articles generated by your keywords.
• Bookmarklet-Adding content to your curated
page through dragging and dropping web
address information onto the Scoop.it toolbar
that you can install onto your web browser.
• Follow- Adding a page curated by someone
else.
Curating Your Page
Creating a new page with a
completely new topic to curate is as
easy as clicking on the Create Topic
button on the home page of your
Scoop.it profile. When this button
is clicked a page is displayed that
allows you to name your topic,
select the language you want to
use, as well as add key words that
add content to the list of articles
that is generated.
Connecting With Others
The biggest value of the social
networking found using Scoop.it is the
ability to interact based on content.
This means that when you post/curate
an article to your Scoop.it profile it will
allow you or others following you to
comment on the content. This can
spark conversations that can carry ideas
found in the original articles even
further. Following and sharing allows
for deeper exploration of topics. Not
only that but these processes allow for
others to share articles that you may
find interesting and helps you to share
the things that you care about most.
How To. . .
What Can You Use It For
Scoop.it allows users to aggregate
valuable content. When looking
through the internet to find
information about any topic one of the
most difficult aspects is finding
information that is good is the sheer
number of articles to be found.
Scoop.it allows you to sift through
many articles quickly, and collect what
you like. At the same time other users
are doing the same thing generating
pages that have powerful content
about almost any topic available.
What Can You Use It For
Scoop.it can be a valuable tool in
education because it allows for the
easy organization of and interaction
with information. Students can add
to each others knowledge base by
adding articles. Discussion boards
can be held within comments
sections, and can allow easy
connections between individual
ideas and ideas presented in text.
What Can You Use It For
You can organize content into
different topic sections,
allowing for a course to unfold
through different areas of your
profile. Once within an area
students will be able to interact
with content and discuss it as
well as add other articles. This
will provide students as well as
teachers new ways to interact
with information and each
other.
