2. Definition
• Drug Abuse means unnecessary use of too many
drugs, the unwarranted use or non- use of any
drug, the inappropriate use of drugs and coercive
use of drugs.
• Drug Addiction means continued use of a
substance for a purpose other than food amount to
addiction.
• Drug dependence means a permanent
physiological change causing an individual to
persistently crave the consumption of particular
substance.
3. Categories of Drugs
Drugs can be classified into two categories.
(1) The soft drug:- e.g. antibiotics and
analgesics.
(1) The hard drugs:- e.g. cocaine, marijuana
heroin
4. Introduction
• The casual factors vary from country to
country, time to time and individual to
individual.
• There are multiple casual factors which
originate both within the minds and bodies of
those who abuse drugs.
• Social and psychological factors which cause
people to use and often abuse the mind altering
drugs.
6. Contributory Factors
There are many factors which contribute to drug abuse.
• Pursuit of Health:- People by and large have never claimed
good health and in an attempt to improve health people resort
to one or another method.
• Pain and problem:- People in order to relieve themselves from
some pain or tension take drugs to which they with the
continued use cannot say goodbye and thereby become addict.
• Alienation and pressure seeking:- Alienation, hopelessness,
despair is a global and often loosely used term for one of the
causes of drug use and many other social evils.
• Curiosity and emptiness:- Especially in young people a basic
desire to experience the unknown.
7. • Easy availability of drugs
• Bio- medical factors:- Development in the
medicine within the last century have an
impact on society.
• Influence of the peer groups
• Influence of the parents
• Influence of the broken family
• Influence of the Religion:- Religious beliefs
and rituals.
• Influence of the defective educational system
8. Cause of drug abuse among youth
There are two primary causes of drug abuse
among the youths. These are;
(1) Peer pressure:- youth associates with
different types of people otherwise known as
friends.
(2) Depression:- when certain things happen to
someone that is considered sad and person
started thinking of the best way to become
happy.
9. Effect of Drug Abuse
The effect of drug abuse on youth is going to
be viewed from three aspects. These are;
(1)Social aspect
(2)Financial aspect
(3) Health aspect
10. Remedies/ Solution to Drug Abuse
• Rehabilitation of the affected persons.
• Teaching the effects of drug abuse in schools.
• Continuous campaign against the use of hard
drugs at the federal, state and local levels.
• Consent of a doctor should be sought before a
prolong take of a particular soft drug.
• Stiff penalty should be metted against anybody
found dealing on hard drugs.
• Parents should monitor the kind of friends their
children with and guide against bad company.
11. Conclusion
• The factors responsible for drug abuse
and drug addiction are wide and varied.
• The casual factors vary from country to
country, in the same country from time to
time, and individual to individual.
• Drug abuse is one of the most complex
and battling problem.
