• Mac Farland pointed that addiction means
use of a substance which is harmful but at the
same time the user feels difficult to stop or
withdraw from such drug.
3. DRUG ADDICTION
• The continued use of a substances for a purpose
other than food amount to ADDICTION.
• According to traditional medical usage, addiction
refers to a condition brought about by the
repeated administration of any drug, whereby
the continued use of such a drug is necessary to
maintain normal physiological function and
discontinuance of the drug results in abnormal
physical and mental symptoms.

6. DRUG DEPENDENCE
• Drug Dependence implies permanent physiological
change causing an individual to persistently crave the
consumption of particular substances. If the use of
such a drug is withheld, the user suffers withdrawal
symptoms, such as chills, pains, restlessness,
respiration, twitching of muscles, nausca and
diarrhea. The frequency and intensity of the
symptoms depend upon the particular drug and
ordinarily subside with time.
7. DRUG DEPENDENCE
• Drug dependence has two independent
component psycho-logic and physical
dependences.
• Psychological dependences is the common
denominator in the abusive use of drugs that
produce effects on the Central Nerves System.
• The Psychological dependence or as ot is some
times called psychic dependence which refers to
craving or strong Psychological need for
pleasurable mental effects produced by a drug.
8. • The WHO in 1964 on the recommendation of
the expert committee stopped trying to
distinguish drug addiction and drug habitation
and adopted the term drug dependences
