A look at the war of 1812

2. The USS Constitution was an
American ship that won three
major battles during the War of
1812.(Constitution Museum).
The Constitution was nicknamed
“Old Ironsides” after British
cannonballs bounced off her
sides in a battle with the British
frigate Guerrierre.
The ship was never retired and
is now on display at the USS
Constitution Museum in Boston,
Massachusetts.
3. The British burned the White
House and the Capitol
building in 1814, but
President Madison was able to
escape.
First Lady Dolley Madison is
known for her bravery staying
behind to save the Declaration
of Independence and a
famous painting of George
Washington.
4. ◦ Francis Scott Key was a poet on a
mission to rescue his friend,
William Beanes, who had been
captured by the British.
◦ The British agreed to let Beanes go,
but the men were not allowed to
leave the British ship until after
they had attacked Fort McHenry.
◦ Key wrote the lyrics to “The Star-
Spangled Banner” as a poem.
◦ The song became the United
States’ national anthem in 1931.
5. The document that
ended the war was the
Treaty of Ghent. This
document was signed by
officials from both the
United States and Britain
on December 24, 1814.
Both sides agreed to stop
fighting; therefore, the
war ended in a
“stalemate.”
6. In January 1815, General
Andrew Jackson led
American troops into a
battle at New Orleans.
This battle was a great
victory for the United
States. Neither side
realized until after this
battle that the war was
already over.
