9. Ninety Mile Beach is on the western coast of the far north of the North Island of New
Zealand. It stretches from just west of Kaitaia towards Cape Reinga along the
Aupouri Peninsula. The beach is actually just 88 kilometers (55 miles) long. Suitable
vehicles can travel of the way via Ninety Mile Beach and Te Paki stream bed.

35. Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua) is the northwestern most tip of the Aupouri Peninsula, at the
northern end of the North Island of New Zealand. Cape Reinga is more than 100 km north of the
nearest small town of Kaitaia. State Highway 1 extends all the way to the Cape. The 'Te Rerenga
Wairua' component of the name in Māori language means the leaping-off place of spiritsm. The
Māori belief that the cape is the point where the spirits of the dead enter the underworld.

panels help you understand and enjoy this special forest ecosystem. A large viewing area set in
a kauri grove allows you to sit in awe of the towering trees around you. The track is suitable for

86. The young plant grows straight upwards and has the form of a narrow cone with branches
going out along the length of the trunk. However, as it gains in height, the lowest branches
are shed, preventing vines from climbing. By maturity, the top branches form an imposing
crown that stands out over all other native trees, dominating the forest canopy.
