multi-phased residence complex. Phases 1 and 2 were completed one full semester ahead of
schedule, despite working in some of the worst winter weather on record in Maryland. Phase 3
completed the nine-building, wood framed residence hall complex set on St. Mary’s historic
waterfront campus.

reviews during the Preconstruction phase and oversaw the 2-year construction project.

Each year since 2005, Connecticut College, KBE, the design teams and trade contractors
have spent the 9-month school year meticulously planning an impressive scope of work
that is then implemented over the 12-week summer break. This “Asset Reinvestment
Program”is a well-conceived, 7-year campus renewal plan for renovating and preserving the
college’s most important asset - its physical facilities and campus. The program is designed
to enhance technology in learning environments, revitalize student life, boost energy
efficiency, and update staff and faculty office spaces. The project has incorporated formal
Partnering principles - with the net result of not one single claim over the six years of work
to date.

The University of Bridgeport has called on KBE for a campus-wide
rehabilitation program designed to improve the University’s physical and
technological infrastructure. The multi-phase project includes renovations
and upgrades to a number of campus facilities.
Projects include:
• Campus-wide Electric Grid Replacement: Seven month project to replace
the entire high-voltage utility infrastructure at the 40-acre campus. The
project affected nearly 50 building on the urban campus, with phased
power shut-downs and start-ups.
• Elevator Modernization Project: Phased upgrades to 7 elevators in two
occupied campus buildings.
• Campus-wide IT/Telecommunications Infrastructure Replacement
• President’s Executive Offices Updates: Interior renovations
• Wahlstrom Library Upgrades: Telecomunications & IT upgrades, new
circulation area, and internet cafe.
• Fones School of Dental Hygiene: Renovation of two floors in existing
campus facility to create a state-of-the art 30-chair dental clinic. The
facility is fully ADA-accessible, allowing for more elderly patients to
receive clinical services. Construction required the integration of new
M/E/P systems to meet the clinic’s operational requirements. The work
was completed while the building was fully occupied and operational.
• Athletic Fields: Conversion of a vacant campus lot into a multi-purpose
athletic field with state-of-the-art stadium lighting and bleacher seating
for over 1,000. The two-phased project also includes a new concession
stand facility, press box, parking lots and landscaping plaza.
• Mandeville Hall: Window replacement and installation of new HVAC
systems in main classroom building.

The Ruth A. Haas Library project encompassed the renovation and
addition to the five-story library. A 35,000 sf swing building - a
permanent campus facility - was built as part of this project, to
temporarily house the library’s 210,000 books, periodicals and other
materials during the phased construction project. The library
remained fully operational throughout construction.

environmental science.

remained fully operational throughout the comprehensive
renovation.

The UCONN Business School’s SS&C Technologies Financial Accelerator is a
technology mecca located in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. The higher education
facility was built to create an experiential learning lab. Designed as a replica of the
NewYork Stock Exchange, the first floor features a live trading floor with real-time
stock feeds. The stock feeds are projected on two 130-foot tickers. The above floors
house several high-tech classrooms, meeting rooms, and café.

22,000 sf Gilder Boathouse serves as home to Yale
University’s men’s and women’s athletic teams. With
its unique timber-framed structure, the boathouse
features a nautical design that accents the natural
beauty of the riverfront. Built partially on piles, the
structure’s footings are located on land while the
rest of the boathouse projects over water. Natural
materials are exposed throughout the building in
the timber framing, wood roof decking, wood
flooring, and fireplace.

The multi-phased renovation and addition more than doubled the size of the existing facility, which first opened on campus in 1953, expanding it from
99,870 sf to 230,700 sf. The project encompassed the creation of a cafeteria, restaurant, food court, and convenience store. As the campus’ cultural hub,
the Student Union features a 500-seat theater, new art gallery, large event spaces, and the new home of the campus radio station, along with a centralized
post office with 15,000 postal boxes. The Student Union remained fully operational throughout the 4 year, highly phased project. KBE was recognized
with an Award of Excellence by the Construction Management Association of America.

The newWestside Campus Center was designed and built to fulfill a
critical need atWestern Connecticut State University. With three
residence halls situated at its Westside Campus and no central
gathering place, the new Center provides a needed sense of commu-
nity for students and faculty.
The Center consists of two buildings connected by a glass atrium and
encompassed by a curtain wall system of structural glass and glazing
shapes. The complex design of the building’s exterior called for many
unique structural steel parts assembled into intricate geometrical
shapes and formations.
