2. What is CBT?
• Talking therapy

• Focus on the Cognitive (thought) processes
• Faulty Thoughts
• Negative emotions
• Affects how a person acts
• Cognitive behavioural therapy aims to change this.
3. Treatment..
• Cognitive behavioural therapy is used to treat conditions such as
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Phobias
• OCD
• Panic Disorders
• Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Research has shown that it is a very effective way to treat Anxiety
based disorders.
4. An unhelpful situation
You see somebody you know in the street, and they walk by without speaking
An unhelpful thought
“They have just ignored me, they do not like me”
This then triggers emotions such as feeling low, rejected. Behaviours such as
going home and avoiding this person further. Also physical feelings of anxiety
may be present.
Somebody who had a more positive outlook – would think differently and act
differently
Cognitive behavioural therapy, aims to change these irrational negative
thoughts and beliefs.

5. CBT Sessions...
• A one to one with a trained therapist
• In a group session
• Online (for very mild/moderate depression)
• Sessions usually last between 30-60 minutes
• How many sessions depends on the severity of the problem
• Homework given at the end of each session e.g. thought diary
6. Strengths and Weaknesses
• Cognitive behavioural Therapy is very effective for treatment of
depression and anxiety disorders
• It is short term
• No side effects
Weaknesses
• The client must want to help themselves – Motivation can be given
from the therapist but the client must do the work
• It is not a quick fix
• Need to be able to confront anxieties which may temporarily
induce increased anxiety.

Aaron Beck – He found that depressed people usually have a train of negative thoughts, that seemed to come up spontaneously. He found that these thoughts were about the person, their world and the future. Beck instituteCognitiveProcesses – The way in which a person thinks – Their attitudes, beliefs, thoughts and images. Homework between sessions – Therapist will set their client a task – something which challenges them and their thoughts. They will then report back to the therapist the following session. Usually use a thought diary. Which will ask them about a situation, how they emotionally felt, physically felt, what they actually thought and if it could be looked at from another perspective. Later on during treatment, usually the therapist will want the client to put into practice what has been learnt, so will ask other things of the client.How we think (cognition) how we feel (emotion) and how we act (behaviour)
A person who is suffering from an anxiety condition would think this wayFollowing the unhelpful thought Comes the physical feelings, and emotional feelings, therefore the behaviour the client displays will be avoidanceCBT aims to change this kind of behaviour.
