Ralph DiNola gave a presentation on zero net energy buildings and constructive innovation at a conference in Fort Collins, Colorado. He defined zero net energy buildings as those that produce as much renewable energy as they consume annually. DiNola discussed the concept of disruptive innovation and how zero net energy goals in places like California are aiming to disrupt existing energy and building practices. The presentation provided examples of early zero net energy projects and discussed challenges and trends in the field, such as improving data collection and operational performance. DiNola closed by assigning attendees the task of advancing constructive innovation and zero net energy through new partnerships and policies.

Closing Session Feedback • The cache of ZNE is real, it is a tipping point • The value of aspirational goal, such as the 2030 which inspired CA. • The Grid is our friend, let’s not alienate the partner in the utility that we need to bring along on this pathway. • EcoDistricts are very inspiring and scale jumping. • Government needs to engage and demonstrate but also get out of the way and let innovation thrive.
