A=Fe,Co,Ni,Cd,Mg
B=Ti,Rh,Mn
Closely related to corundum, α-
Al2O3
Symmetry is rhombohedral.
5. Properties of ilmenite.
Ilmenite crystallizes in the trigonal system. The
ilmenite crystal structure consist of an ordered
derivative of the corundum structure.
in corundum all cations are identical but in ilmenite
Fe2+ and Ti4+ ions occupy alternating layers
perpendicular to the trigonal C axis.
Containing high spin ferrous centers, ilmenite is
paramagnetic.
8. Magnetic property
• Magnetic structure of BaM is complex.
• Fe ions in 5 different sets of crystallographic
site.
• The net effect is that in formula BaFeO , 8 of
the Fe ions have their spins oriented in 1
direction & remaining 4 are antiparallel , giving
a resultant of 4 Fe ions with a moment of 20
BM .
