The media product represents teenage girls as its target social group. It does this by showing the main character Polly as a girl around the target age wearing clothes like the group would. Her dark clothing and interests represented through knives and nooses shown in scenes reveal her as destructive and interested in creepy or harmful things. Color transitions between scenes help indicate shifts between past memories and the present, showing these interests have continued into the present.
2. In the beginning shots of Polly on the drive we are able to see that
she is a girl, and is in the age range of our target audience,
therefore meaning that our audience are more likely to connect
with her, despite the fact that she turns out to be the villain in
amongst it all as the clip goes on. The clothes she is wearing also
allows us to portray her social group, again which is very similar to
the one in which we are aiming our film towards. She is wearing
black jeans, black coat and boots, this also matches her persona,
which is soon learnt, further on in the sequence.
3. As the sequence continues the mood of it changes, the colour
become a lot darker and scary, which is such a huge difference
between the black and white cellar scene to the coloured drive
scenes, this helps to show (along with the shots going around
Polly’s head) that we are no longer in present day when the black
and white shots show, that we are looking back on her memories.
The things shown in these clips aren't expected from when you first
look at her. However we had to get the mise-en-scene correct so
that we were to portray in the right way there are particular
scenes when you can see the nooses tied up in the background,
showing the sorts of things she's into, an insight into her mind.
4. We used knives and nooses to show that
she was of a destructive nature, that was
into creepy things and the thought of
killing or harming interested her. We
were able to show this through her being
very gentle and careful with the nooses,
she wasn’t pushing them around or
being overly violent. The same for the
knife, the way in which she looks at it is
very admirable, the knife is something
very close to her and she enjoys the fact
she is showing it off as some kind of
prized possession, her eye line doesn’t
leave the knife until the last moment
where she holds it up and looks directly
at the camera. Which definitely helps to
add something quite scary and creepy
to the scene, its like she’s interacting
with the audience, it looks like she is
looking a you individually.
5. A scene towards the
end shows her exiting
the cellar, which goes
from black and white o
colour. This shows the
audience that this
scene has gone from
the past into present
day, the colour
transition is fairly smooth
but very noticeable. It
also shows that the
things within her
memory haven't
stopped happening,
she still visits the cellar
regularly and has the
same habits.
