18. Objective
• Develop a Network Slicing technique for IEEE 802.11ah networks that
• Manages radio resources
• Reconfigures Restricted Access Window (RAW) parameters over time
• While considering the QoS restrictions of each service being offered in the
network

19. Network Slicing in IEEE 802.11ah
• Each RAWGROUP represents a slice
• One slice per service
• Video, temperature sensor, …
• A slice is described by its service
features and QoS restrictions
• Service features
• Avg packet size, transmission interval
• QoS restrictions
• Delay, jitter, packet loss

20. Virtual Network Slicing Broker (VNSB)
• Characteristics
• Virtual Network Slicing Broker as Virtual
Network Function (VNF)
• Instantiated in a Software Defined
Network (SDN) controller
• Communicating with an IEEE 802.11ah
network Access Point via a southbound
API

21. Virtual Network Slicing Broker (VNSB)
• Northbound API
• Service features
• QoS restrictions
• Actions
1. Define RAW groups in the
RPS
2. Check QoS restriction
violations
3. Adapt RAW configurations
over time
• Southbound API
• Statistics monitoring
• Configuration
enforcement
• Two approaches
• Static
• Dynamic

22. Static Approach: Getting it all together
• Resource ratio depicts how waiting time and transmission interval relate to each
other
• Since the services are heterogeneous, why not exploring this to reallocate
resources over time for different services?
• The full picture is as follows:
• Services with different characteristics & constraints
• Static resource allocation procedure

23. Dynamic Approach
• The broker uses the
slicing templates
• To verify if QoS
restrictions were violated
• Reallocate resources
between slices
• Update RPS with new
RAW configurations

26. Conclusions
• Network Slicing in IEEE 802.11ah Networks
• Virtual Network Slicing Broker to manage network slices over time
• Managing the RAW configurations based on the features of the services being offered in the
network and network status
• Preliminary results showed the broker capacity to dynamically adjust slice
resources over time, improving network performance
