Following in the successful TMC Topics webinar series, Childbirth Connection offered a webinar highlighting the work of the Louisiana Birth Outcomes Project with Project Director, Rebekah Gee, MD, MPH, FACOG. Dr. Gee discussed the coordinated state-wide effort to create a culture of continuous quality improvement and safety in Louisiana’s birthing hospitals. The project involves tracking and reporting performance, implementing quality improvement toolkits, enhancing access to preventive care, and adopting best practices from high-performing maternity care systems.

During a new session of Congress with health care reform and budget deficits on everyone’s radar again, Childbirth Connection hosted two health care leaders for a webinar on the intersection of maternity care disparities, health care law, and the rising cost of care. Ray Cox, MD, Chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology at St. Agnes Hospital, Maryland, presented the business case for equity in maternity care, showing the economic impact of disparities in access and outcomes of maternity care in his presentation "Making the Business Case for Equity in Women's Health". Kevin Fiscella, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Community & Preventive Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, reviewed the provisions in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that are intended to reduce maternity care disparities in his presentation "The Blueprint for Action: Disparities in Access and Outcomes for Maternity Care - Implications of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act."
