Keynote at POPL 2006 by Tim Sweeney, Epic Games Abstract: Game developers have long been early adopters of new technologies. This is so because we are largely unburdened by legacy code: With each new hardware generation, we are free to rethink our software assumptions and develop new products using new tools and even new programming languages. As a result, games are fertile ground for applying academic advances in these areas.And never has our industry been in need of such advances as it is now! The scale and scope of game development has increased more than ten-fold over the past ten years, yet the underlying limitations of the mainstream C/C++/Java/C# language family remain largely unaddressed.The talk begins with a high-level presentation of the game developer's world: the kinds of algorithms we employ on modern CPUs and GPUs, the difficulties of componentization and concurrency, and the challenges of writing very complex software with real-time performance requirements.The talk then outlines the ways that future programming languages could help us write better code, providing examples derived from experience writing games and software frameworks that support games. The major areas covered are abstraction facilities -- how we can use them to develop more extensible frameworks and components; practical opportunities for employing stronger typing to reduce run-time failures; and the need for pervasive concurrency support, both implicit and explicit, to effectively exploit the several forms of parallelism present in games and graphics.

With large scale and complex configurable systems, it is hard for users to choose the right combination of options (i.e., configurations) in order to obtain the wanted trade-off between functionality and performance goals such as speed or size. Machine learning can help in relating these goals to the configurable system options, and thus, predict the effect of options on the outcome, typically after a costly training step. However, many configurable systems evolve at such a rapid pace that it is impractical to retrain a new model from scratch for each new version. In this paper, we propose a new method to enable transfer learning of binary size predictions among versions of the same configurable system. Taking the extreme case of the Linux kernel with its ≈ 14, 500 configuration options, we first investigate how binary size predictions of kernel size degrade over successive versions. We show that the direct reuse of an accurate prediction model from 2017 quickly becomes inaccurate when Linux evolves, up to a 32% mean error by August 2020. We thus propose a new approach for transfer evolution-aware model shifting (TEAMS). It leverages the structure of a configurable system to transfer an initial predictive model towards its future versions with a minimal amount of extra processing for each version. We show that TEAMS vastly outperforms state of the art approaches over the 3 years history of Linux kernels, from 4.13 to 5.8.

Configuring software is a powerful mean to reach functional and performance goals of a system. However, many layers (hardware, operating system, input data, etc), themselves subject to variability, can alter performances of software configurations. For instance, configurations' options of the x264 video encoder may have very different effects on x264's encoding time when used with different input videos, depending on the hardware on which it is executed. In this vision paper, we coin the term deep software variability to refer to the interaction of all external layers modifying the behavior or non-functional properties of a software. Deep software variability challenges practitioners and researchers: the combinatorial explosion of possible executing environments complicates the understanding, the configuration, the maintenance, the debug, and the test of configurable systems. There are also opportunities: harnessing all variability layers (and not only the software layer) can lead to more efficient systems and configuration knowledge that truly generalizes to any usage and context.

The Coccinelle C-program matching and transformation tool was first released in 2008 to facilitate specification and automation in the evolution of Linux kernel code. The novel contribution of Coccinelle is to allow software developers to write code manipulation rules in terms of the code structure itself, via a generalization of the patch syntax. Over the years, Coccinelle has been extensively used in Linux kernel development, resulting in over 6000 commits to the Linux kernel, and has found its place as part of the Linux kernel development process. This talk will review the history of Coccinelle and its impact on the Linux kernel. It will also briefly present two newer tools, prequel and spinfer, that have built on the Coccinelle infrastructure.

By Robert Fach, TechniSat Digital GmbH Attendees will learn about a system which solves a code reproducibility problem in the automotive systems area. The code reproducibility problem is defined as being able to rebuild a binary identical software release for a specific amount of time (up to 15-20 years after initial release) and to rebuild a software application with only small changes, keeping the unchanged parts binary identical with the related release. The problem complexity grows due to: external dependencies in a changing environment, a requirement to perform cross-platform builds, scaling issues (hundreds of gigabytes of source code) and more. The Technisat Dresden team achieved their goals by combining several tools in the right way: Jenkins + custom Jenkins plugin, SaltStack, KVM and SVN/Git.
