Introduction –
Sitting opposite new-comer Chloe White, you’d never imagine her to have rose to fame as quickly as
she did and still be keeping a level head with media attention and all the late nights barely fazing
her. She’s such a small thing, hair loose and natural and wearing dark leggings, baggy top, leather
jacket and boots looking just like any other girl of her age at nineteen years old. I’m here with her
today to chat about how she’s got here, what plans she has for the future, and of course her new
album, Here, which is available to buy in store and on iTunes now. Us here at Feature magazine feel
that Chloe is the star to keep your eyes on this year, we all expect even bigger things from her.
What musical inspirations do you have?
I like big name female artists like Beyoncé, Adele and Miley Cyrus. They are their own people and
don’t conform to what others want them to be. I really admire that kind of independence.
I also look up to the solo artists who had their time before me and you, the likes of Dusty Springfield,
Chrissie Hynde and Dolly Parton. I’ve grown up listening to their music and I often think that you can
hear hints of them in the way I sing and write my music.
A dream of mine is to one day have others looking up to me as an inspiration like I have to so many
before me. The thought of that is amazing!
When did you first decide that music was for you?
I was quite young, probably half way through Primary School, when I entered the school talent
competition as part of a Spice Girls/Girls Aloud inspired girl band with my three best friends. We
didn’t win, but I suppose it was a start – third place was good enough.
After that I began really taking an interest in music and its different styles, often performing for
friends and family, and then finally approaching my late teens, I decided to upload some of work
onto YouTube and different social media sites. It all went from there really, looking back I am proud
that I worked to get where I am now.
How did you feel when you released your first album?
I couldn’t believe it, I still look back at that now and pinch myself in case it was a dream. The fact
that my team and I managed to get it into the top charts around the world is surreal. All these
people willing to buy my music listen to me sing and watch my videos. I love my fans, they’re all so
supportive. I’m still a little on edge now - I’m having so much fun and the thought of anyone taking
this away from me is scary. I want to hold on for as long as possible.
What kind of jobs have you had in the past?
Growing up in a working family, I was taught that working for what you want is important. As soon
as I became of age to start job hunting, I did. I started off doing mostly bar work in my local pub, and
then progressed onto waitressing in The Marriott. I love people, so these jobs worked well for me. I
couldn’t imagine myself in a job which secludes me from the rest of the world. I’m the type of
person who needs to make connections with people. So I suppose the job I have of performing in
front of so many people is perfect for me.
Describe your style?
I guess you could say I’m a little bit of everything. I find that my music has quite a Rocky-Pop vibe –
have I just made up my own genre there? Ha ha ha
I’m into my leathers and skinny jeans at the moment too, (as you can probably tell) mostly because
they’re easy to throw on in the morning. I like that my music has a little something for all different
types of people; this means that I get to meet all different types of fans.
Are your family supportive of your musical decisions?
My family love the fact that I’ve managed to achieve doing what I’ve loved all my life. My Grandma
especially – it was a wish of hers to see me up on stage one day, and I hope I’ve made her proud. My
little brother loves the fact that I get to meet all his favourite artists too. Just last week I was talking
to Justin Bieber. I don’t know who was more excited – me or Matthew (Chloe’s 14 year old
brother)!!!
Do you ever wish for a day off?
Sometimes I get tired and hope for a day spent just lazing about in bed all day, however I’m not
naturally a lazy person, so I don’t mind getting up in the mornings and getting ready for a new day. I
can’t just switch off on my fans, who have also worked so hard to get me here, that’s what drags me
out of bed in the morning. When I do get time to myself though, I love nothing more than to just sit
about all day eating my favourite foods and watching films.
(Her favourite food being McDonalds and film, anything Disney)
What was the idea behind the album?
With Here, I wanted to show people who I am. So with this first album, my fans could make their
own minds up on whether they liked my style or not. A lot of the songs are quite personal to me, and
feature quite a lot of personal memories. Wait For Me and Stop When You’re There are my favourite
songs off of the album and my favourite to perform. I can really get into them emotionally and I just
hope my fans can too.
