4. Red Lotus Lake
• It is a natural fresh water lake with
distinctive feature abundant with fishes,
birds and flora.
• It is located in Khum Pawapee district of
Udorn Thani Province.
• Surrounding communities rely on resources
from this lake including the widespread red
lotus, which spans a total land cover of
9,000 Acres.
• Due to its unique ecosystem, it attracts both
domestic and foreign researchers as well as
tourists to visit.

6. • Tourists can visit blooming Red
Lotus 3 months a year, from
December to February.
• In 2009, there were 5,000
tourists and increased to 25,000
tourists in 2010.
• And now it is rapidly increasing
trend due to locally and
regionally joint promotion
activities in various forms.
7. Three Way Partnerships are
adopted to achieve the shared
objectives as follows:
2.1 Local public sector: Udorn Thani
Provincial Administration
Organization Its roles were:
• Formulated policy and strategy to
promote cultural, natural and
environmental tourism particularly
for the Red Lotus Lake.
8. • Provided physical infrastructure
development including pier
development and safety, car
parking and souvenir booth, etc.
• Promoted Visiting Red Lotus Lake
Campaign during its blooming
season.
• Conducted Marketing in Bangkok,
Capital city.
9. • Performed joint marketing activities
e.g. “Miracle Million Lotus Photos”
Contest, etc.
10. Offered a wide range of tourism
services including:
Home-stay packages (charging 300
Baht per night per person plus 1
meal)
Watch the sunrise.
Boat trip to see the Red Lotus and
scenary charging 100 Baht per
person with duration of 1 hour and a
half. If they come as a group or a
family, there will be providing boat
for rent at reasonable rates.
11. Run souvenir shops, food stalls and
refreshments.
For profit sharing, 10 % of boat rent is
allocated to local Sub-district
Administration Organization.
During low season, local people turns
to alternative occupations e.g. boat
rent for bird watching, fishing and rice
farming.

tangible development of Red Lotus
Lake community-based tourism.
• Moreover, local and regional value
chain development helps promote
sustainable community-based tourism.
13. Local community-based tourism supports
both sustainable livelihoods and being
important supplementary sources of rural
household income.
Social media is an useful tool to
disseminate information of community-
based tourism.
