For awareness about treated water purity & quality – Toxicity free treated water for reuse
SCOPE : Toxicity free treated water @ all WWTP Operations, Reuse & Verification
We are facing treated water quality crisis. Treated non complains effluent discharge contaminated land and eco system. It is directly affected to our food production and human health and well being.
A healthier human future needs urgent action for smart sustained water reuse management. The one of the important management tool is ETV (Effluent Toxicity Verification) System

Abstract:
We are facing treated water quality crisis. Treated non complains effluent discharge contaminated land
and eco system. It is directly affected to our food production and human health and well being.
A healthier human future needs urgent action for smart sustained water reuse management. The one of
the important management tool is ETV (Effluent Toxicity Verification) System.
What is being tested?
Most commonly, effluent from industrial or municipal wastewater discharges are tested. ETV system is a
method of online bio monitoring Treated effluent toxicity. ETV system determines efficiency of treatment
plant and treated effluent quality.
What is ETV (Effluent Toxicity Verification) System?
ETV systems were developed as a tool for evaluating the potential harmful effects of treated
effluent/effluents discharge into surface water or land.
What are the common causes of toxicity?
Toxicity can be caused by chemical, physical or biological factors or a combination thereof. Chlorine, a
chemical used for disinfection and ammonia, a by-product of waste are common causes of toxicity.

TOXICITY
What organisms are used in ETV system?
The organisms used in testing vary by region. For aquatic toxicity studios in India, following
are the common species for acute and chronic test.
1) Puntias Stigma
2) Puntias Sophore
3) Anabas
4) Chela bacalia
5) Puntia ticto and
6) Colisa faciatus
Other fresh water fish species like Gambusia affinis (mosquito fish) can also considered
Daphnia pulex and D.magna (daphnids), Selenastrum Sp., Scenedesmus aculeala, Scenedesmus
guadacada are also recommended.

OUR EXPERIMENT
In our experiment we test the effect of our treated water on
ornamental fishes, which are considered to be very sensitive to any
small changes in the water quality parameters. This is to prove our
treated water quality, which will be observed regularly by studying
the changes in the aquarium, be it fish mortality or plant death.
Bioassay test using fishes is being done for a long time, but
the fishes selected are hardy in nature. For example few brackish
water fishes are selected for studying the toxicity of their
environment. Fishes like Mugil cephalus (Mullets), Chanos chanos
(Milk fish), Lates calcarifer (Sea Bass), etc… Bioassays using
ornamental fishes are very rare and that is why we selected these
ornamental fishes and to prove our treated water standards.
