According to Wikipedia: Open science is the umbrella term of the movement to make scientific research, data and dissemination accessible to all levels of an inquiring society, amateur or professional. It encompasses practices such as publishing open research, campaigning for open access, encouraging scientists to practice open notebook science, and generally making it easier to publish and communicate scientific knowledge. Here (in this remixed on purpose) we will explore some of the key dimensions and opportunities behind the open science and its opportunities for digital scholars.

This study focusses on the role of highly active participants in online learning communities on Facebook. These people, often known as “power users” in the literature on social computing, are a common feature of a wide range of online learning groups, and are responsible not only for creating most of the content but also for getting discussion going and providing a basis for other’s participation. We test whether similar dynamics hold true in the context of online learning. Based on a transactional dataset of almost 10,000 interactions with an online community of 32 postgraduate students who were following the same online course, we find evidence that power users also exist in the context of online learning. However, whilst they do create a lot of content, we find that they are not fundamental to keeping the group together, and in fact are less adept at creating content which generates responses than other “normal” users. This suggests that online learning communities may have different dynamics to other types of electronic community: it also suggests that design efforts should not be focused solely on attracting a small core of “power learners”. Rather, diverse types of users are needed for online learning communities to survive and prosper. Now that you've completed the Gamification Level 2 Course, you can apply to earn your certification from the Engagement Alliance. To do this, you'll need to complete a final project and submit it for publication. It's easy! Choose a non-profit organization, cause-based group or startup for social good. Figure out how gamification can help them, using at least THREE game mechanics and TWO PLAYER TYPES. What we want here is a creative idea. Create a presentation that lays out your idea for how to help. If you're visual, you can illustrate it, or simply describe your ideas. Here's an example of something I developed that's similar on the subject of texting and driving. Notice the creative ideas listed - that's the meat of what we want to see from you. Remember to clearly state the problem you're trying to help them solve and how you're proposing gamification can solve it. Post your proposal publicly to slideshare, and send out a TWEET to the organization and me (@gzicherm) inviting us to review it. Be sure to include the hashtag #gamification and the link to the item. When that's done, complete this form at the Engagement Alliance website.

Learning takes place in a variety of settings as an ongoing process of skills and knowledge development in changing contexts. With the growing popularity of technology-enhanced learning initiatives, we make the case for more flexible methods for skills and knowledge recognition. The challenge is to create more versatile ways of recognizing uncertified forms of learning – both for formal qualifications of informal learning as well as wider social recognition of uncertified knowledge.

These slides reflect a full-day experiential leadership lab at OD Network, 2013. The dance of privilege is present when individuals in a “power down” position are marginalized, while individuals in a “power up” position experience disconnection. This dynamic has costly impacts. In the lab, learners learned about 1) global leadership competencies which enable skillful performance when encountering the unknown and threats to self identity. 2) concepts of implicit bias, stereotype threat, and privilege as power dynamics related to structural inequality of many kinds. 3) strategies for global leadership development, and micro-interventions In the lab, learners were guided through improvisational exercises to engage emotional, rational, somatic, and intuitive selves. We practiced compassionate presence, honoring needs for belonging and feeling valued, and appreciating risk-taking. This lab is dedicated to the extraordinary change agents, Edie and Charlie Seashore, who both passed in 2013. We engaged in “Seashorian” learning: Edie's humor and reframing of stories of passivity to stories of agency; Charlie's playful explorations of the self.

The aim of this paper is to describe an innovative large-scale action research in the field of education. This paper illustrates a unique sample of a global network of schools working together as a "living lab" to test, implement and improve innovative pedagogical practices in seven different countries (clusters). This experience can be regarded as a disruptive experiment from the methodological (i.e. network of schools), pedagogical (i.e. learning by creating) and accountability perspective (i.e. novel ways of assessing learning outcomes). This global network allocates special relevance to the cultural and contextual specificities of each member. This paper focuses on the Uruguayan case, the only non-developed partner country, which is working in incorporating up to 2,800 schools in this global network by the end of 2019. After providing a background and key figures of the current education system in Uruguay, the authors describe the outcomes of this experience so far (2013- 2016) and highlight some of the expected achievements and instruments to assess the second phase of this experience (2016-2019), with special emphasis in the design of new metrics and the adoption of new assessment tools. This paper focuses on the Uruguayan case, the only non-developed partner country, which is working in incorporating up to 2,800 schools in this global network by the end of 2019. After providing a background and key figures of the current education system in Uruguay, the authors describe the outcomes of this experience so far (2013- 2016) and highlight some of the expected achievements and instruments to assess the second phase of this experience (2016-2019), with special emphasis in the design of new metrics and the adoption of new assessment tools. By using metaprogramming and versioned pipelines that are tested end-to-end, we can achieve fast schema changes with schema-on-write and the protection of static typing. We will describe the tools in our toolbox - Scalameta, Chimney, Bazel, and custom tools. We will also show how we leverage them to take static typing one step further and differentiate between domain types that share representation, e.g. EmailAddress vs ValidatedEmailAddress or kW vs kWh, while maintaining harmony with data technology ecosystems.
