caused by workplace violence. Chris Grollnek has
earned a reputation as one of the leading experts on
training to prevent active shooter incidents.
An active shooter incident is one in which a shooting
is in progress. The active nature of the event implies
that law enforcement and citizens may be able to
affect the outcome of the event through their
responses.
According to a 2014 FBI study, 160 active shooter
incidents occurred annually in the United States
between 2000 and 2013.
3. These events resulted in 1,046 total causalities,
including 486 deaths. The study also revealed that 70
percent of these incidents took place in a business or
educational environment. Additionally, 60 percent of
the incidents concluded before law enforcement
arrived on the scene.
These trends indicate the importance of active
shooter incident training. People present at the time
the event occurs are the true “first responders” to the
situation. Having an understanding of how to respond
to active shooters can help mitigate risks associated
with violent incidents.
