1. Integrated English /Astronomy practice for primary school students ( 2th-4th grade)
Theme of the lesson: The Solar Sistem
Lead in : 3- 4 minutes
Short discusion, what children know about the Solar sistem and the Sun.
The drowing of Solar sistem.
Give a peace of paper for everybody. Every young pupil drows the Sun in the centre of the
paper. At first you can drow a little circle in the middle of each paper where must be the
sun. Otherwiste, the children will drow the sun in the whole paper.
While kids are drowing, you can talk about the Sun in simple, easy, understandable
sentences. ( For example:In fact the Sun is a giant star. If we compared the sun with a ball
in the stadium, the Earth would look like a small ant.)
Give for all students a sheet of paper with planets and they have to cut out the planet with
scissors. When kids cut out, you show where planet must be in the paper. They can paint
Venus in orange or Mars in red. While kids are cutting you can tell about the planets.
Kids like when you rate them. When the work will be finished you can put a funny sticker
on their drowing of the solar sistem.
The performance „The Solar System“.
It will be great if kids have masks with planets.
They must have a sheet of all performance. You can underline words for each pupil. If a
child is Jupiter he has all performance, but Jupiter's words are underlined. The kids read
the performance.
While the planets are moving you can put a song "I like to move it" from the film
Madagaskar.
Lesson outcome:
Ask students : what have you learned today? What can you do now?
Example: I know all the Solar system planets. I can say a sentence about Venus or Mars.
2. The performance „The Solar Sistem“
Astronomer: Hello children! Do you like to look at the sky? I am an astronomer and I love watching the sky.
There are millions of stars. No, no countless number of stars and planets. I can’t count stars in the sky. Kids,
could you repeat after me? I can’t count stars in the sky.(Kids are repeating.)
Businessman: Is it really impossible to count stars. Maybe I could put them in my suitcase. Kids, what do
you think?
Astronomer: No, it’s impossible.
Businessman: Why?
Astronomer: Sun, could you help us? Kids, let’s ask together the sun, why?
The sun: I ‘m the nearest star. That’s why I don’t look like a spot but like a pancake in the sky.
Astronomer: In fact the sun is a giant star. If we compared the sun with a ball in the stadium, the earth
would look like a small ant.
The sun: Besides, I’m very hot.
Astronomer: The sun is much hotter than a pan. It is so hot that whoever touches it would suddenly
disappear.
Businessman: So if the sun is too big and hot for my suitcase, maybe I could take the moon with me?
The moon: Though I am smaller than the sun I am still very big. Maybe you would like to see how we move
around each other?
Businessman: Yes, we would love to see. Kids, let’s ask together: show us how you move, show us.
The moon, the sun: Let’s also invite the earth to join us because that’s where we live. Earth, earth. (all kids)
The earth: Hello, I’m the earth.
The moon: I move around the earth and make my circle around the earth in one month.
The earth: I make a circle around in one day and a big circle around the sun in one year.(The earth is
moving.)
The sun: So everyone moves around.
Astronomer: It’s a trick! Stars can’t fall because there is no ground under them.
3. The earth: I move around the sun with my 7 sisters. We, eight planets, move around the sun. So let’s
invite them by clapping our hands. (Kids are clapping.)
Mercury: My name is Mercury. Please, repeat my name.
Venus: I’m, the Venus. Please, say my name.
The earth: My name is Earth.
Mars: My name is Mars.
Jupiter: My name is Jupiter.
Saturn: My name is Saturn.
Uranus: My name is Uranus.
Neptune: My name is Neptune. (Planets are moving around the sun.)
All planets: Maybe you would like to take our places?(Kids from audience are taking planets’ moulages and
moving around the sun.)
Mars: I want to make friends with other planets.
Jupiter: But how?
Saturn: We can’t get closer to each other or we may collapse and have a disaster.
Uranus: Then let’s invite guests to come from one planet to another.
Neptun: That’s great idea.(An alien is coming.)
Venus: Look! Can you see aliens?
An alien: Hello, I am an alien from Mars. I’m different from you because I don’t have enough air in my
planet. Try not to breathe for some time.
The earth: Then how can we reach them?
Astronomer: Usually only astronauts or robots travel to the space.
Businessman: Ok. I’ll buy two robots. Let’s invite them. Robots, robots (The businessman is shouting.)
Robots: We’re the robots.
Astronomer: We will also need a spacecraft.
Businessman: No problem, I’ll buy a spacecraft too. Where’s our spacecraft?( The spacecraft is flying.)
Astronomer: So, where are we going to fly? (Kids are shouting : Venus, Mars…)
An angel: Don’t forget that we love all the Universe and we travel to our friends and not enemies. Grab the
tail of the comet and let’s fly with our spacecraft.
