Committed to providing a supportive and safe educational environment that fosters student engagement and success, James Cook University (JCU) has taken a proactive approach to the use of data in a dual-pronged approach to improve the student experience and curriculum design. Blackboard Analytics for Learn is a key tool within these initiatives. Analytics for Learn provides real-time data that can be used by staff in a variety of roles to support student success. This presentation will outline how JCU is adapting Analytics for Learn, including discussion of initial customisations made to 'out-of-the-box' reports and the development of personalised dashboards, as well as providing an overview of the coordinated approach to the staged 'roll-out' and adoption of reports and dashboards. Delivered at Innovate and Educate: Teaching and Learning Conference by Blackboard. 24 -27 August 2015 in Adelaide, Australia.

Presentation of research findings and implications from a large-scale analysis of LMS activity and grade data from across 927 institutions, 70,000 courses, and 3.3 million students. This webinar will speak to the promise (and potential pitfalls) of large-scale learning analytics research to promote student success.

Faculty and academic departments creating innovative educational practices are often starved for useful data and analysis to determine whether their innovations made a difference. Research has found that this data is a systematically significant predictor of success much more powerful than traditional demographic or academic preparedness variables. This leads to a “virtuous loop” in which digital technology adoption enables assessment which then improves educational practices using those technologies. This presentation was delivered at the Online Learning Consortium Collaborate Event, November 19, 2015.

Presentation delivered at WASC ARC conference on April 11, 2013 on the CSU Data Dashboard and Chico State Learning Analytics case study. Chico State Case Study: Academic technologies collect highly detailed student usage data. How can this data be used to understand and predict student performance, especially of at-risk students? This presentation will discuss research on a high-enrollment undergraduate course exploring the relationship between LMS activity, student background characteristics, current enrollment information, and student achievement. CSU Data Dashboard: By monitoring on-track indicators institutional leaders can better understand not only which milestones students are failing to reach, but why they are not reaching them. It can also help campuses to design interventions or policy changes to increase student success and to gauge the impact of interventions.

Rewriting the Rules: Institutional procedural change based on analysis of student feedback As part of a large JISC-supported institutional project on assessment and feedback, two different types of institutional data were analysed to identify potential changes to assessment procedures and practice. Comments from institutional student survey data were analysed to identify 10,000 comments relating to assessment. Coding of these comments enabled the project team to identify a series of areas for change which were common across the institution, rather than just using the survey data for course-level changes, which had happened in the past. This led to the production of new institutional assessment procedures designed to improve the student experience. Institutional records about assignment types, which had been produced simply to support course validation, were then analysed to discover the ten most common types of assignment in use across the institution. Detailed guidance on implementing the new procedures was then developed for these ten assignment types, which accounted for two-thirds of the total number of assignments being taken by students. The combination of data from different parts of the institution has enabled change to be made and supported in a way novel to the university.

One certainty about the future of higher education is that online technologies will play an increasingly central role in the creation and delivery of learning experiences, whether through mobile apps, MOOCs, open content, ePortfolios, and other resources. As adoption increases, the ‘digital exhaust’ recording technology use has increasing potential to understand student learning. The emergent field of Learning Analytics analyzes this data to provide actionable insights for students, for faculty, and for administrators. What have we learned in Learning Analytics to date? What challenges remain? How should we apply Learning Analytics to create our ‘preferred’ future’ that supports deep and meaningful learning

This presentation was given at the Education and Information Systems, Technologies and Applications (EISTA) Conference in Orlando. It provides details on a program that was created to help simulate the types of issues that a residential property manager would normally face in his or her job, such as building lease-up, marketing, budgeting, crisis management, and personnel hiring, among several other things. Results are given from an experiment that tested satisfaction with the simulation in both competitive and non-competitive environments, as well as the potential for the simulation to attract students to a "Residential Property Management" concentration. The University of Georgia is one of only about 6-8 colleges and universities that offers such a concentration.

Blackboard’s data science team conducts large-scale analysis of the relationship between the use of our academic technologies and student impact, in order to inform product design, disseminate effective practices, and advance the base of empirical research in educational technologies. In this presentation, John Whitmer, Director of Analytics & Research, will discuss findings from 2016. Some findings challenge our conventional knowledge, while others confirm what we believed to be true. Archived presentation made to JISC Learning Analytics workgroup on Feb 22, 2017

Course revision is a reality of daily life in higher education. Each semester, faculty review their courses to ensure that they are presenting current concepts and providing proper methods of assessment and interaction for their students. Unfortunately, most review and revision is done during periods of frantic activity just before or during the beginning of the semester. This methodology does not allow for deep consideration of issues and can negatively affect learning for students. Focused revision is a methodology of review that tasks faculty to review a course over a longer period of time and focus on one pedagogical aspect, such as interaction, content presentation, rubric development, etc. Focusing on a specific aspect of a course, to the exclusion of others, increases the efficacy of that aspect of the course while maintaining the current level of quality on the other aspects. This methodology also changes course revision from a summative process to a formative process and allows for the effective inclusion of student feedback into course design. The process also allows faculty to create efficiencies in their process to maximize time and minimize work. Multiple focused revisions may build on each other to create a synergy between course components, thus creating a more effective learning environment in both the physical and the digital classrooms, leading to increased student engagement and learning.

The ability to collect, manipulate, analyze, and act on vast amounts of data presents a potentially powerful opportunity for educational researchers. The explosive growth of interest in data analysis in turn has been driven by research into online education, by scholars with access to data at an unprecedented scale, and by government, social services and non-profits leveraging data for social good. This emerging discipline of data science relies on a novel mix of mathematical and statistical modeling, computational thinking and methods, data representation and management, and domain expertise. This talk is about a National Science Foundation awarded research project and was presented at the Big Data National PI conference in Washington, DC March15-17. 2017.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.
