In this talk I will touch on some hard problems in health informatics around working with structured data and why we can’t link and reuse them with ease. The essence of the problem is that, while clinicians can perfectly understand each other, IT systems can’t. Traditional IT requires formally defined common terminology, meta-data, data and process definitions. While Medicine is mostly accepted as positive science, yet the great variation in the body of knowledge and practice is often seen as ‘Art’. Ignoring this bit, IT people tend to develop all-inclusive common information models (almost always too complex to implement) and expect everybody adhere to that. Clinicians love to do things a bit differently and of course don’t buy into that! Maybe they are right! Maybe we don’t have to agree on a uniform model at all. This is the basic assumption of the openEHR methodology which I will describe by giving clinical examples. The main premise of this approach is to effectively separate tasks of healthcare and technical professionals. Clinicians can easily define their information needs as they like using visual tools – called Archetypes which are essentially maximal data sets. These computable artefacts, built using a well defined set of technical building blocks, are then fed into the technical environment to integrate data or develop software. Lastly the free web based openEHR Clinical Knowledge Manager portal provides collaborative Archetype development and ensures semantic consistency among different models.

A presentation to the English Australia Ed Tech Symposium - Plenary Address. Abstract: Those institutions that have pivoted rapidly from teaching face-to face to teaching fully online have learned many lessons over the last 18 months, both good and bad. But for some, this has been nothing new, instead it’s simply been business as usual. We have seen that those who fared better have well established frameworks in place to mediate their technology-enhanced learning offerings. That is, they have recognised processes that define how they translate what they have in policy, procedures and planning into practice. Such a framework can be found within a number of quality tools, that are designed to provide institutions with clear guidelines as to what need to be in place to facilitate a robust and consistent approach to teaching with technology. Once present, it makes it easier to undertake online teaching that does more than just mimic face-to-face practice, providing a robust platform to allow innovative pedagogies to thrive. Typically, this means the online learning has, or can become far more, active, collaborative and authentic. This presentation with share some of the things that have been observed across the higher education sector over the last 18 moths that we can all learn from.

School-based users, both students and educators, have always been a primary target audience for museum on-line content. Museums and other cultural organisations have made significant investments in developing and disseminating content on-line to reach and engage these users. Yet despite the obvious logic of this connection, in practice it has proven difficult to build effective permanent bridges between the wealth of museum digital content and the classroom environment. While many individual institutions host outstanding educational content on their individual Web sites, this material may remain inaccessible or under utilised in a classroom environment due to technology and security constraints, or simply through lack of awareness or discoverability. We are yet to develop effective and sustainable supply chains of museum digital content from multiple institutions for use in classroom environments. In Australia and Canada two new national approaches to solving the supply chain problem have been developed by two agencies working with museum organisations to facilitate the flow of content into classroom environments. This paper examines the imperatives driving these initiatives and the lessons learned in creating an integrated national approach to developing digital supply chains for school-based users of museum content.
