2. • The Cinema of Greece has a long
and rich history.
• Five Greek films have received
nominations for the Academy Award
for Best Foreign Language Film.
• Though Greek cinema took root in
the early 1900s, the first mature
films weren't produced until the
1920s.
• Following the Greek Civil War,
Greek cinema experienced a
revival.
• During the 1950s and 1960s, Greek
cinema experienced a golden age.
• After the restoration of democracy
in the mid-1970s, the Greek film
industry again flourished.
• In spite of funding issues created by
the financial crisis in the late 2000s
unique Greek films received
international acclaim.

3. • The first full-length Greek feature film was produced in 1914.
• The country’s major studio (Finos Film) was established in 1943.
The Greek film industry produced films that attracted growing
audiences
• By the late 1950s the film industry was at its most
dynamic,experiencing growth. The first two films which attracted
significant international attention were “Stella” (1955), directed by
Michael Cacoyannis, and “The Orge of Athens” (1956), directed by
Nikos Koundouros.

• More than sixty films per year were made.
• The film Stella (1955), directed by Michael Cacoyannis and written by
Iakovos Kambanelis, was screened at Cannes.
• The Thessaloniki International Film Festival was first held in 1960, and
would subsequently evolve into the primary showcase.
• In 1969, the Costa-Gavras film Z was nominated for the Academy Award for
both Best Foreign Language Film and Best Picture.

Theodoros Angelopoulos Yorgos Lanthimos
Theo Angelopoulos began to study
law in Athens but broke up his
studies to go to the Sorbonne in
Paris in order to study literature.
When he had finished his studies, he
wanted to attend the School of
Cinema at Paris but decided instead
to go back to Greece.
Yorgos Lanthimos is a Greek filmmaker
and theatre director. He was born in
Athens. He studied directing for Film and
Television at the Stavrakos Film School in
Athens. His feature film career started with
the mainstream film My Best Friend where
he shared directing credits with mentor
Lakis Lazopoulos.

6. Giannis Dalianidis
Pantelis Voulgaris• Giannis Dalianidis was a Greek
director. In 1959 he directed his
first film, the film Mousitsa. In
1961 he started to cooperate with
the Finos Films the most
successful Greek film production
company.
• He directed over than 70 films
and 10 television series during his
career.
• Pantelis Voulgaris is a Greek film
director and screenwriter.
• His first feature film To proxenio
tis Annas in 1972 won the first
prize in Thessaloniki International
Film Festival.

7. Greek actors
Ellie Lambeti Melina Mercouri
• Ellie Lambeti was a Greek actress.
She studied theatre at Marika
Kotopouli's drama schooland she
also worked with Karolos Koun
Art Theatre. In the mid fifties she
created a group with two Greek
actors and in the sixties she gave
unforgettable performances with
it. She died from cancer in the
United States.
Melina Mercouri was born in Athens,
Greece. An early woman activist, she
was elected to the Greek Parliament
in 1977. In 1971 she wrote her
autobiography titled "I Was Born
Greek". Melina Mercouri died of lung
cancer in New York City, on March 6,
1994.

8. Tzeni Karezi
• Tzeni Karezi (Evgenia Karpouzi)
was born in Athens, Greece She
learned French fluently. When she
was a teenager, her father left the
family and she continued to live
with her mother. Her father died in
a car accident
• In 1951 she was accepted at the
Greek National Theater
• Upon graduation, in 1954, she was
immediately thrust into starring
roles in the theatre
• She appeared for the last time in
theatre in 1990 in the Loula
Anagnostaki play Diamonds and the
blues, but, suffering from terminal
breast cancer, she was in great pain
and had to leave the show for
palliative treatment

9. Aliki Vougiouklaki
• Aliki Vougiouklaki was born in
Marousi, Athens.
• As a student, she took part in school
plays which eventually led her to an
acting career. She attended classes
in National Theatre of Greece and
started to act professionally while
still a student.
• She appeared in 42 movies, mostly
musicals, television programs and
theatre productions.
• He received the prize for lead
woman's role at the inaugural Greek
Cinema Festival in Thessaloniki in
1960 for her starring role in
Mantalena.

10. Thanasis Veggos
• Thanasis Veggos was a Greek actor
and director born in Neo Faliro,
Piraeus.
• He performed in around 130 films
• comedies in the 1950s, 1960s, and
1970s, starring in more than 50
among them.
• He is considered one of the best
Greek comedy actors of all time.
• Veggos' first appearance in a film
was in Windfall in Athens
• His characters were often self-
named "Thanasis"
• A documentary of his life, whose
title translates as A Man for All
Seasons, was made in 2004.
• He always did his own stunts
including the most dangerous ones,
like hanging from a rope tied to a
balcony fifty feet above a pavement
without anything to break his fall

Dimitris Horn
• Lambros Konstantaras was a Greek
film actor. He appeared in 80 films
between 1940 and 1981.
• He was born and died in Athens.
• He studied acting in Paris and
graduated in 1933
• After working in several theatre
groups he formed his own
• In his youth, many of his roles were
of a serious nature but later on in
life he played almost exclusively
comic roles usually as an executive
or the father of the bride, etc.
• Dimitris Horn was born in
Athens in 1921
• He studied at the Drama School
of the National Theater of Greece
• He established from an early
stage a reputation as "the best
actor of his generation," giving
outstanding performances in
classics such as "Diary of a
Madman"
