Overview
Apple Inc.’s developer conference last month showcased a slew of
hardware and software announcements, and healthcare has become a
fundamental part of many Apple products this year.
This document shares key healthcare highlights announced at WWDC
2019, with use cases and mHealth app considerations.

Highlight 1: User Authentication - Sign in with Apple
Key Features:
▪ Ability to mask email id from third party
services by generating a unique private
email for user. Apple’s private email relay
allows users to receive emails and keeps
their addresses private
▪ Frictionless two factor authentication
mechanism using FaceID / TouchID
▪ “Anti-fraud Tech” to detect if the user is a
bot or not
▪ Compatibility with Android apps and Web
applications via JS APIs
One of the key security announcement from WWDC 2019 was the introduction of “Sign-in with
Apple”, where users can leverage their Apple IDs to log in to third party applications similar to
social media logins like “Login with Google and Facebook”.
mHealth Key Use Cases:
▪ Wellness management
▪ Patient and physician engagement
mHealth Considerations:
▪ Apps will not be able to access personal
information such as email, DOB, etc.
▪ Existing users using mHealth application will
require account migration planning to use
Apple’s sign-in feature
▪ Apps using Google services (e.g., Google
Drive) will need second authentication after
integrating with Apple sign-in feature
From a security perspective, Apple offers a better alternative for users and developers when
compared with other social login mechanisms which often encounter data related issues like lack
of data transparency, using public data for advertising services, etc.

Highlight 2: macOS Catalina and iPadOS
Key Features:
▪ Add Touch Bar (MacBook Pro is not touch-
enabled)
▪ Provides Pencil support in Apple Sidecar
▪ Enables with adding notes and Apple’s
Markup feature
▪ Works with a direct wired connection /
wirelessly via Bluetooth
▪ Offers Sidecar Sidebar feature, to give
access to users most commonly used
controls
▪ Released PencilKit APIs to support
annotations, notes, gesture feature, etc.
Latest feature coming to macOS Catalina and iPadOS 13 is Sidecar. This new feature will enable
users to extend their Mac displays to iPad. Users would be able to use Apple Pencil with Mac.
mHealth Key Use Cases:
▪ Medical imaging viewers / Zero footprint

▪ Apps which need annotations, text, notes,
etc. support on imaging applications
mHealth Considerations:
▪ Feature designed only for macOS. No support
for Windows OS applications
▪ Requires applications to run on the latest
version of macOS Catalina. Older versions of
macOS do not support the Sidecar feature
End-users can extend their iPads to be used as secondary screen and use out-of-box features such
as Apple Pencil for annotations and gestures to pinch zoom and pan images.

Highlight 3: Focus on ML - Core ML 3 Feature Updates
Key Features:
▪ On-device model personalization
▪ On-device speech and sound framework
▪ Update in Vision APIs to support image
saliency, text recognition, and search in
images
▪ Word embedding (NLP)
▪ Speech saliency, (speech and sound) —
pronunciation information, streaming
confidence, utterance detection, sentiment
analysis, and acoustic features
Apple has updated its existing machine learning framework Core ML 3 to support On-device
intelligence to further improve privacy and security.
mHealth Key Use Cases:
▪ Physician facing applications can now reduce
documentation time by allowing physicians to
dictate and file clinical notes in offline mode
▪ Patient facing mHealth apps (with On-device
machine learning model based on data/vitals
received from wearables) can help healthcare
transform and shift the reactive healthcare
model to more proactive and predictive care
▪ Behavioral modification analysis of users
using the sentiment analysis API of Core ML
Core ML 3 becomes the first widely available machine learning framework to support both
inference and training directly On-device without any dependency on server-side with a
framework such as Tensorflow or PyTorch.

Highlight 4: Immersive Experience - ARKIT 3, RealityKit
Key Features:
▪ People Occlusion: Hide and show objects
as people move around in your AR scene
▪ Simultaneous Front and Back Camera Use:
Users can interact with AR content with the
rear camera view by using just their face
▪ Motion Capture: Use movement and poses
in real time as input for AR experiences
Another major update is the ARKIT 3 framework along with two new frameworks - RealityKit and
RealityComposer. This offers enhanced immersive experience with features such as people
occlusion, simultaneous front, back camera usage, etc.
mHealth Key Use Cases:
▪ Diagnosis of chronic care conditions
▪ Patient education
▪ Training technicians on medical devices
Challenges:
▪ ARKit 3 features will be only supported on
iPhones and iPads that are powered by an
A12 Bionic processor or newer processors
▪ ARKit 3 supports only “USDZ” file format for
3D objects. Other formats such as OBJ, STL,
DAE, etc. are not supported
Developers can take advantage of ARKit’s updates and frameworks to integrate human movement
into an app and apply People Occlusion to – track up to three faces simultaneously, support
collaborative sessions, and more.

Highlight 5: watchOS 6
Key Features:
▪ Removes the need to have a companion
app installed on the paired iPhone
▪ Calculator, audio books, voice memos apps
will be included in Apple Watch
▪ Dedicated app store for watch specific apps
▪ Built-in microphone in Apple Watch to
provide a loud environment warning to
users
▪ Period tracking app for women to check
their menstrual cycles
▪ New APIs allow apps stream audio directly
to the watch
Apple has now released a new OS update for Apple Watch. Apple Watch with watchOS 6 Beta
updates gets a step closer to being independent from iPhone.
mHealth Key Use Cases:
▪ Personalized care Apple Watch apps
▪ Physician and Patient engagement apps
▪ Vitals tracking apps
mHealth Considerations:
▪ Developers can now develop and distribute
Apple Watch apps on dedicated app stores
▪ Enterprises applying mHealth apps, that act
as companion apps for Apple Watch may
have to consider a migration plan to take
advantage of new APIs and stay relevant
Features such as a loud environment warning, period tracking app for women, ability to stream
audio directly to watch coupled ECG monitoring (released last year in Apple series 4) will allow
healthcare enterprises to increase focus on proactive care with positive health outcomes.

▪ Apple possesses the device ecosystem, large user base, brand
image, and incentive structure to make healthcare patient-
centric
▪ Healthcare enterprises should focus on adoption to new
software updates
▪ Quick adoption and implementation would lead to higher user
adoption rate
