Metric System

   (it’s easier than you think!)
Easier Because:
 It’s based on 10’s
 It’s based on universally found items
 Ex: One milliliter is equal to one gram of
    water
Basic Units (and abbreviations)
 Mass: gram (g) (the amount of matter in something)
 Distance: meter (m) (the length between two points)
 Volume: Liter (L) (the amount of space something
    takes up)
 Time: second (s) (how long an event takes to
    happen)
 Temperature: degrees Celsius (°C) (the average
speed of the molecules in something)
Prefixes
 These are the words that come before the
    basic units
 They show how much there is
 Example kiloliter would be abbreviated to kL
 Kilo (or k) means 1000
 So, you have how many liters in one kiloliter?
The ladder method
 Used to convert among prefixes:

    Kilo (K)
    (King) Hecto (H)

               (Henry) Deca (da)
                       (Died) Basic Unit
                                (by)
                                        Deci (d)
                                        (Drinking)
                                                     Centi (c)
                                                     (chocolate
                                                                  Milli (m)
                                                                  (Milk)
Try these examples:

 100Kg= ____g
 45 m= ____cm
 45 cm= ____m
 39.67 ms=___ s What is bigger: 1000 meters
    or 1 Kilometer?
 What is bigger: 55,000 liters or 56,000,000
    milliliters?
