This panel discussion focuses on how blogs are changing the nature of academic discourse. This is not a workshop on "how to blog" but an examination of the value and impact (positive or negative) of academic blogs within specific disciplines. We hope our discussion will be of interest to faculty who do not read blogs but may be curious as to what academics are doing in the so-called "blogosphere."

Presented at the 2015 Electronic Resources and Libraries Conference in Austin, Texas. Co-presenter: Barbara Taylor, Lead Instructional Developer, Academic Technology Services. Abstract: As the cost of a college education continues to rise, students are piling on debt and recent graduates are struggling under the weight of loans. The Cougars Affordable Learning Materials Project (CALM) aims to aid faculty in replacing costly textbooks by using high-quality open educational resources (OER), library resources, digital or customized textbooks, and/or faculty-authored materials. Presenters will lead participants in a session on how to identify OER and how they can create their own sessions.

There is a trend sweeping the education sector right now: “flipping the classroom”. As a means of increasing student engagement and learning, instructors are assigning videos to view as homework, and then using in-class time for discussion and active learning activities, instead of lecturing. What exactly is ‘flipping the classroom’? How does it work? Does it really increase student engagement and learning? What resources can be used?

A panel of Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) members will share how they are adopting OER for degree pathways, certificates, and courses at their colleges. CCCOER was founded in 2007 and now composes over 250 colleges in 21 states and provinces. Members collaborate online regularly at monthly webinars and advisory meetings and in-person at conferences on best practices for OER adoption. This cross-institutional sharing of open educational resources, open practices, open policies, and open research provides a powerful OER advocacy network for community colleges. New members have immediate access to online resources and a community of OER practitioners and experts who can help them launch their projects more efficiently and quickly. Meetups at regional and national conferences provide an opportunity to share and promote successful OER adoption strategies of our members with colleagues in higher education. Audience participation will be welcomed. Our eLearning Panel will be moderated by Una Daly, CCCOER Director and our panelists include: • James Glapa-Grossklag, Dean, Educational Technology, Learning Resources and Distance Learning College of the Canyons • Dana Hester, EdD, Dean, Social and Behavioral Sciences & Distance Education, Citrus College • Elliot Jones, PhD, Music Professor and Open Textbook Author, Santa Ana College
