2. 1. HOW ARE SHADOWS AND PATTERNS
CREATED TO REPRESENT VINCENT‟S STATE
OF MIND?
Next
3. Vincent's state of mind in this freeze
frame is used with shadows to create
an atmosphere that he is being
“vanished to the tower or doom”
The dark, long and sharps stair case in
which Vincent is ascending up, shows
how the patterns of the stairs help to
add the gothic theme to the frame.

4. Vincent's state of mind in the point of the film
where his horrible zombie dog Abercrombie take
the form of his shadow. This representing that the
monster lives within him and that he has now been
„possessed‟ by his horrible creations and dreams.
The back and white distorted disco pattern on the
walls show that Vincent's “insanity had reached it
peak” by the shape and movement of the walls.
the lighting of the walls casts deep shadows in the
corners and edges of the walls representing the
room closing in on him, leading to his death.
FREEZE FRAME 2 back
5. The background of this frame is a diamond
type of checked shadows which can reflect
on the different mind scape from Vincent
Malloy to Vincent price. The diamond
reflection can symbolise the confusing and
unhuman the life of Vincent price. This
diamond wallpaper is used repetitively
throughout the film.
The single slit of light that is shown in this
picture highlights the chiaroscuro lighting
and dark circles on Vincent's face, and that
he would be assumed to be in a dark room
with no light but with a single window or
globe which is shun on him.

6. 2. WHAT DOES BURTON SUGGEST THROUGH HIS USE
OF STYLIZED LIGHTING, ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN VINCENT MALLOY‟S PERSPECTIVE AND HIS
MOTHER‟S PERSPECTIVE
Next
7. Vincent's mothers perspective of things
is sunny and happy where as Vincent's
is dark and scary. The contrast when
Vincent is digging up his wife's grave
and then turns out to be his mothers
garden bed, suddenly is light up when
his mother is brought into the frame.
This happens throughout the film as
Vincent's state of mind is dull and
whenever his mother is brought into
the frame he then seems to come back
to reality.
FREEZE FRAME 1 back
8. Whenever Vincent's mother seems to
go a ray of sunshine seems to follow.
When she suddenly bursts into
Vincent's room he is startled and
makes the reader feel like he had
been in his room for years by the way
it is dark and with shadows.
Burton suggests that his mother
thinks that he is playing a silly game
in which he never leaves his room.

9. Burtons use of lighting in this frame
suggests that Vincent has been
locked away for years and is only
now being introduced to the light.
Vincent's mother seems oblivious to
the environment in which her son is
living in. This is because the world
she is in is sunny and bright. In this
freeze frame Vincent's room is
portrayed as some sort of dungeon
where the use of lighting outlines
the lack of lights and windows in his
room.

10. 3. WHAT IS IN THE FRAME, WHAT
HAS BEEN LEFT OUT? WHY?
Next
11. The idea of leaving the adults head
out in the frame is repetitive in the
film. Vincent's mother doesn‟t
understand his imagination and
thoughts, so burton uses the cutting
of the heads in the frame to
symbolise that the head is the
epicentre for imagination and the
adults don‟t have any more
imagination, and that it is loss as you
get older.
FREEZE FRAME 1
back
12. The previous frame is much like this
one that an adult head has been
left out. Vincent being a child looks
up to the adults in his life which
makes the adult seem bigger that
what they actually are because you
cant see their head the view doesn‟t
know where it is going to appear.
Vincent is so small compared to the
adults that have power over him,
and by leaving the heads out of the
shot we are shown that Vincent is
very much smaller than the adults
around him
FREEZE FRAME 2
back
13. In many other cases the heads of
adults is left out, but in this frames
Vincent's sisters head is still on.
The head is usually cut of the more
superior human in the frame but in
this case Vincent and his sister are
on the same level of thinking and
imagination so there fore there is
no need to the cut out. whereas
Vincent and his mother are on very
different thinking levels.

14. 4. WHAT DOES PLACEMENT OF OBJECTS
WITHIN THE FRAMES TELL US ABOUT
VINCENT MALLOY
Next
15. Most objects are hanging from the
celling which gives the frame a gothic
feel. In most horror movies things pop
out and hang down from the roof which
is often scary or has features of
anthropomorphism. Vincent Malloy is a
scary adult who like horrific things and
Vincent Malloy is just a boy who usually
wouldn‟t have things hanging form his
ceiling. This tells us that Vincent Malloy
is a quiet and reserved boy.
FREEZE FRAME 1 back
16. In the first scene of the short
film Vincent is situated in his
room. His room appears to be
bear with nothing in it. This tells
us that he is a quiet boy who is
does need much to be happy.
Vincent is a simple boy who
thinks hard about life and its
quirks. The lack of objects in his
room tells the audience that
Vincent himself is unusual.
FREEZE FRAME 2

17. When Vincent is in the form of Vincent
Malloy he is kind and respectful,
enough so that the cat trusts him
enough to sit on his shoulder. When he
then transforms into Vincent Price the
cat jumps off his shoulder giving the
impression that an evil emotion has
now taken over Vincent Malloy. The
reader then learns that there are
significant differences between the
two boys.

18. 5. WHERE ARE THE CHARACTERS PLACED
WITHIN THE FRAME AND WHY
Next
19. All freeze frames show the same thing which is Vincent being
in the middle of the room with the scary and horrific things
around him, and with his mother in the sides.
When Vincent is in the frame he is the centre of attention
because he is the main character, with his dreams and
nightmares surrounding him. When his mother is In the frame
she is placed on he edges just like the other things that scare
Vincent, as his mother doesn‟t understand him and towers
over him.
FREEZE FRAME 1,2,3
20. Most common German expressionist films are shot in black
and white, to give the film and extra bit of scariness and
suspense.
I think that Vincent is shot in black and white because it
gives the movie a suspenseful atmosphere before anything
has even happened.
Black and whit movie usually have an narrator so that‟s one
of the other reasons why Burton chose to film it in black and
white
6. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT VINCENT IS
SHOT IN BLACK AND WHITE?
21. The sound effects in Vincent create a scary and suspenseful
atmosphere.
The starting of the film is opened with Vincent playing his
recorder. This song he is playing is a soft and peaceful tune
but then when compared to Vincent price the music changes
into a dark and sharp tone.
The music that accompanies Vincent Price is always scary
music for example
Whenever the narrator is talking about Vincent Malloy no
music is played and it is silent but when the story turns to
Vincent price dramatic music turns on for example:
7. LISTEN TO THE SOUND OF THE FILM. CONSIDER THE SOUND
EFFECTS AND WHAT THEY CONVEY. HOW IS THE ATMOSPHERE
OF VINCENT CREATED VIA THE SOUND DESIGN?
22. When character dialogue is used the audience understand the
character more by the way they speak and by what they say.
When a film has no character dialogue only a narrator the
audience sees a different side to the character that they
usually wouldn‟t have seen straight away.
Narration is often used to tell the audience important
background information that they wouldn‟t have known
through the voice of the character.
Tim Burton uses Edgar Allen Poe as the narrator of Vincent to
explain the story line of the short film.
8. WHY DO WE HAVE A NARRATOR AND
NOT CHARACTER DIALOGUE
23. The whole script for the narrator is basically a rhyme.
The pace of the transcript in consistent throughout the film as
is doesn‟t speed up nor slow down during the course of the
film.
When the characters are in an intense situation the rhymes
get more intense and dark for example:
Though he‟d rather share a home with spiders and bats
There he could reflect on the horrors he‟s invented
And wander dark hallways, alone and tormented
9. LISTEN TO THE RHYTHM OF THE VERSE AND THINK ABOUT
HOW THE NARRATION OF THE POEM RELATES TO THE ACTUAL
ON SCENE ACTION. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PEACE
OF THE NARRATION? EXPLAIN
24. Vincent's features on his face include wide
eyes with dark circles around them, a sharp
chin, a slim and skinny face and a small
scrunched up nose. Many other animated films
that burton has done the characters have
multiple of the same facial features as
Vincent for example, in Franken weenie the
character has a turned up nose.
The audience is usually surprised and amused
by the Vincent's appearance as he Is an
unusual sort of character. The shape of
Vincent's face is most striking because it is
something that the audience will look at first.
Vincent's body is skinny and small, the shape
of his face ties in perfectly to create this
character.
10. FOCUS ON THE LOOK OF THE CHARACTERS, PARTICULARLY
VINCENT. WHAT STRIKES YOU ABOUT THE SHAPE OF HIS FACE AND
BODY, HIS APPEARANCE AND HIS GESTURE? WHAT MEANING DOES
AN AUDIENCE TAKE FROM HIS CONSTRUCTION?
26. Lighting
Chiaroscuro lighting is
used in the short film to
show the difference
between burtons
thoughts/ dream to
reality. The theme of the
movie is set by he
lighting for example, the
lighting in Vincent is dark
and shadowy which sets a
scary and mysterious
theme. Burton has
chosen pacific lighting
techniques that replicate
German expressionist
film elements. Burton
uses lighting to pinpoint
the important features
and parts of the film.
WHY DOES BURTON USE GERMAN-
EXPRESSSIONIST- FILM-ELEMENTS TO GIVE
DEEPER MEANING IN VINCENT?
Décor
The setting or décor is
used to amplify
character, costume and
emotion. The fact that
Vincent is based on Tim
Burton in some aspects
gives the audience some
idea of what type of
person he is. Vincent's
clothing choice is strictly
stripes which is featured
on many of Burtons other
characters. The deeper
meaning of German
expressionist film
elements that Burton has
choses to uses helps the
audience understand the
characters better.
Sound
The sound effects that
accompany Vincent
though his journey help
the audience understand
the story. Vincent‟s
journey from being
Vincent Malloy to Vincent
price is commentated by
words and sound which
burton has choses
pacifically to fit the
scene. The sound in the
film helps give deeper
meaning to the film by
having an extra way to
create depth and
atmosphere to the film.
