invented by Ludwig Guttmann, through a
rehabilitation program in a hospital in
England.

9. Steve Garber, Alissa Burkholder and Ashanna
Randall, three engineers from the Johns
Hopkins University, have made possible that
blind people play basketball.
Blind Industries and Services of Maryland have
financed this proyect.

10. The system:
They use electronic wadgets that produce
sounds. There are some of them in the field (like
in the baskets) and obviously in the ball. In that
way, the players
can know where
are they located
and where is the
ball.
12. The important structures of the foot can be divided
into several categories. These include:
bones and joints
ligaments and tendons
muscles
nerves
blood vessels
Many of the problems and injuries in the knees, hips
and back that athletes suffer are related with a
problem in the feet.
The foot is an incredibly complex mechanism.
We have done an interview to a sports podiatrist to know more about the foot care.
14. 1. In which consist being a sports podiatrist?
It consists in being specialized in pathologies of the foot and injuries resulting from
sports.
2. What did you study to become a sports podiatrist?
First the podiatry graduate at the University of Madrid and later a master of biomechanics
and sports podiatry in Sevilla.
3. Why did you specialize in sports?
Because since I was younger I like do sports.
4. Do you receive a certain sport athletes or everything in general? And what ages are
most common?
Lately I have been receiving a lot of people that play paddle. It is a popular sport because
everyone can practice it, the rules are really simple. They also come many runners. The
main age is between 40 and 50, some people believe that are still young… Children that
play basketball also come with small injuries requiring a biomechanical analysis.
5. What injuries are most common?
The most common injuries are fasciitis, heel spurs, tendinitis in the Achilles tendon and
metatarsalgia.
6. Do you think that athletes take care of these feet properly?
A few years ago little was known of foot care, but now it is more valued and athletes have
realized that it is the support structure on which all movements are exercised.
7. What suggestions do you recommend us to prevent sports injuries?
I recommend a good warm up before sports, and stretching after a sport activity.
Adequate footwear to sports surface is also essential.
8. What treatments do you do?
My treatments are mainly based on custom templates, i.e. to size for each athlete, so
that correct excessive or negative movements made by their feet. I also offer stretching,
rehabilitation or bandages.
9. How is a template made?
First a mold with phenol foam is made to collect the foot shape of the athlete, then it is
filled with gypsum to obtain a negative foot and finally materials are heated to make the
template in an oven, and they are shaped with the gypsum mold. Then the template is
shaped on the polisher and lining.

16. Basketball as a social, cultural and educative
phenomenon
Basketball helps the people to know how to play
in teams and how to get a common objective. It
makes the players to put the success of the
team before his or her own success. For
example if one player can shoot a triple but he
decides to pass the ball to a mate that can
shoot, too.
17. Learn to work
in teams and
to share is
important for
the education
of children.
18. Some fashion in basketball
They born in 1908 as a footwear for the basketball
players.
