I have finally come around making my thesis publicly available. Feel free to share and leave any feedback. A big thank you to Professor Alexis Weedon, my supervisor at the University of Bedfordshire - you introduce me to so many amazing people in the world of books and publishing, and made me improve my ideas exponentially. An excerpt that gives you a flavour of the key focus: Reinventing the book? This thesis departed from the core research question: how can the affordances of the digital medium be explored to produce new kinds of book-inspired artefacts? The question relates to the value of digital media to create new kinds of books; to whether there is indeed any value for the industry in using digital media to create new kinds of books. This research mapped a changing landscape over the period of study, documenting important changes in the ways a range of producers — from the larger publishers and technology giants, to small start-ups and independent artists — explored digital affordances, and reacted to changes in technology and the new behaviours and expectations of contemporary audiences. Authors, publishers and other kinds of producers have been using digital media to make new kinds of books, new kinds of texts influenced by analogue/print books, and by other media forms. Digital media - in a range of digital technologies, devices and platforms - provide a wide set of affordances that can be explored to produce new kinds of books. This thesis has shown several examples that demonstrate value for both the industry and consumers, both in terms of commercial success and critical acclaim for producers, and the pleasures offered to consumers, evident in comments, ratings and reviews, and on direct experience of trying many of these artefacts. The affordances of digital media can be explored to effectively create new digital forms of the book. However, diverse kinds of producers see different affordances in the same set of digital media, in a similar fashion to the ways in which different animals look at the same environment in quite different ways to take advantage of different affordances (Gibson, 1986). But why does this happen? Different producers are influenced by practice; their views are shaped by what they know and by what they are able to perceive as possible (or desirable) in the digital medium. Affordances have to be perceived to be explored. Furthermore, even when perceived, there is also the question of having access to the right set of skills and experience, of being able to actually tap those affordances.

Mixing the Potion: Reader Participation, Brand Consistency and Collective Intertextuality in the Design of a Fantasy Adaptation, by Claudio Pires Franco. Digital media have opened a myriad of possibilities for reading, writing, and creating stories. There are new ways for authors to engage with readers, including platforms that facilitate participation and the (co-)creation of texts, part-authored, part fan-based. By reflecting on practice-based research the Nature Mage case study engages with current theory and debates on digital books, multimodality, adaptation and participatory culture. The analysis brings to light continuities and tensions between print and digital, between author canon and fan creativity, and explores the idea of collective intertextuality as a way of looking at the co-creation of adaptations.

From Storytelling to Story-playing Intertextuality and Contexts of Production in Game Adaptation This paper proposal is based on a study of game production in the context of cross-media strategies, and follows the adaptation journey of the Muddle Earth IP from a children’s book, into a BBC TV series, and finally into a game. The research looks at the text and its production, drawing on empirical data from game-playing, interviews with producers and the analysis of design and production documents. Game adaptations of narratives from other media are based not just hypertextually on their source texts, but also intertextually on other games and games conventions. Besides textual influences, game adaptations are also strongly shaped by ‘extratextual’ conditions of production (budgets, technology, editorial guidelines), all of which influence the ways in which game adaptations translate existing narratives. The paper explores how storytelling devices in games both remediate older forms of media, but also create new ways of telling (or playing) stories. In this process, different source narrative elements are reused, enhanced or discarded – and mixed with ludic elements – through decisions shaped by commercial, editorial and other criteria, which ultimately define the final game text. Steering away from outdated notions of ‘fidelity’ in adaptation studies, the paper proposes the concept of ‘brand consistency’ as an essential requirement of cross-media strategies, to achieve seamless audience experiences and maximize IP audiences across media. The theoretical framework is derived from game studies, adaptation studies, intertextuality theory, narrative theory, and political economy.

It is a study of game production in the context of cross-media strategies, and follows the adaptation journey of the Muddle Earth IP from a book, into a TV series, and finally into a game. At a time when cross-media strategies have become an established part of the children’s media landscape, staying ‘on brand’ across different media is an essential factor to maximise audience benefits. In order to provide seamless cross-media experiences, game adaptations are required to live up to the expectations set up by their source materials – brand consistency becomes an essential target for production. Brand consistency, however, is a fluid concept with floating meanings, often only defined in operation when producers provide feedback in processes of revision leading to the approval of new content. Furthermore, it can be found at different levels, from surface form (visual elements, game assets), to deeper content (tone, style and effect). The research investigates both, and makes use of narrative concepts and models to assess brand consistency at the more complex level of content. Game adaptations are also required to meet the expectations of game players. Adapting into a new medium includes some level of remediation, but also entails the use of new devices and conventions, which offer different kinds of pleasures. This study looks at the ways in which these were translated, continued and modified in Muddle Earth. The research looks at the text and its production, drawing on empirical data from game-playing, interviews with producers and the analysis of design and production documents.
