Hey! I’m Suvi from Finland, and we are gonna talk about learning and technology in Switzerland and in France. The presentation is about Carole and Clement’s own experiences of using technology in learning, the national strategy and the main ideas of what should be improved

As a student I keep a really good memories of my school years. I know that I own this to my teachers because they were really good and learning with them was really interesting and funny. Moreover, I was really excited to learn new things everyday and share them with my parents or the other students.

During all my studies, I never really used educational technology in my classroom we had traditional blackboard. I used occasionally the only computer if I had to do a presentation. We also used video projector and watch some documentaries at TV but that was it.

Since 2 years, I’m doing internships in Switzerland as an assistant teacher. I noticed that nothing has really changed since I was a child 10 years ago. Teachers in primary school still don’t use technology as a pedagogical support, they only use it to prepare their lessons and use their e-mail box for communication.

During my years as a mechanical engineering student, we have used different kind of technology, such as CATIA to design functional systems on computers, or programming this kind of machines to cut into the steel in order to create the part we designed.

We have also used measuring machines to measure the geometrical characteristics of an object
And for other subjects such as electronics, robotics, or project management, we have been drawing diagrams and using management software.

I have also worked at an Airbus Industry.
We used a lot the Intranet database for technical documentations, and update the work that has been done for the tracability of everything. We also used videoconferencing to communicate.

How and why technology is not used in classrooms
So actually it seems that technology is usually not used in classrooms because of the attitudes teachers have towards technology. Teachers do not want to change their habits.

They are afraid of challenging their position in having the authority. (feeling ignorant /insecure in front of the students) They are skeptical about the benefits of using technology in learning. They are in a rush and feel that using technology is just a burden.

The strategies are more like recommendations towards schools and teachers.
But since the Charlie Hebdo shooting, education has become a very hot topic. New plans and ideas are being considered. The aim is to educate students to information medias.

In our countries, they started to write some national strategies about technological education. For example, they want to create a student space who could be use at home to do homework.

They also want to create an online notebook to communicate with parents in a secure way, instead of handwriting mails delivered by the student. They also could use it to write the absences and grades, in this way parents and director will always know what’s happening.

The ideas that the government have about using technology to support education is for example lighten the heavy school bags by changing the books to e-books. They want pupils to start using tablets and in many schools they are lending laptops to pupils for the semester.

A certificate now attests students with skills to create, research and communicate on computer with a responsible attitude.
New teachers need to have acquired skills on wise use of ICT tools, attested in their master certificate.

One other thing which as to be improved is the teacher’s formation. Teachers need to have a good formation to become good teacher and the need to be passionate about teaching They also need to have a technological training to be sure to understand how to use technology and not be afraid to teach it.

And last but not least, we need to have a real national plan, not experimentations (we had 12 EdTech plans on 30 years of experimentations, only in some schools). Schools do what they want, as teachers, the administration and the ministry of education are disconnected
