True Colors Celinda Miranda April 11, 2011 HRE 4025 – Principles of Adult Education
ORANGE
If your highest number was in the first column (COWBOY), you are an ORANGE!
ORANGE Act on a moment’s notice Witty, charming and spontaneous: they consider life as a game to be played here and now! Impulsive, generous and impactful: they need fun, variety, stimulation and excitement in all aspects of their lives. Optimistic, eager and bold: they value skill, resourcefulness and courage. Physical, immediate and fraternal: they are natural trouble-shooters, performers and competitors!
ORANGE At work: bored and restless with routine and structure – need independence and freedom! In love: seek similar interests and activities with partner. Also thrive on physical contact and spoil their loved ones! During their childhood: had most difficult time of all fitting into an academic routine. Learn by experience and action, not reading or listening. Easily motivated by competition and a sense of fun!
COMMUNICATING WITH ORANGE Oranges share thoughts as soon as it hits their mind. Skips “soft” language and gets straight to the point. Tips for success: Use “Sound Bites.” Move with them while they multitask Appreciate their flair! Allow for options and flexibility in assignments Lighten up! Oranges frustrate others by ignoring rules, being undisciplined and quick-tempered, thinking out loud and impulse buying!
I’M FREAKING OUT! When managing their time, Orange’s biggest stressors are: Distractions, constant re-prioritizing or creating new options Boredom with dull or routine tasks Missed deadlines or lack of follow-through Disorganization or not sticking to established systems. Oranges are frustrated by rules and laws, deadlines, paperwork, lack of adventure and too much structure.
GOLD
If your highest number was in the second column (SCALES), you are a GOLD!
GOLD Follow rules and respect authority. Loyal, dependable and prepared: have a strong sense of right and wrong. Thorough, sensible and punctual: need to feel useful and to belong! Faithful, stable and organized: value their homes, families and tradition! Caring, concerned and concrete: they are natural preservers, parents and helpers.
GOLD At work: provide stability and maintain organization. Detail-oriented and hard working! In love: serious-minded views of love. Want to build secure life with partner and do practical things to show their love. During childhood: followed rules and regulations. Understood and respected authority; comfortable with academic routine Easiest of all types of children to adapt to educational system!
COMMUNICATING WITH GOLD Golds specifically listen for detail so they know what their part is. Sizes up a situation to respond appropriately. Tips for success: Be prepared and give them details. Stay on target and be consistent! Show respect. Don’t interrupt! Recognize their contributions. Golds can frustrate others by being “control freaks,” acting bossy, planning for everything, working long hours and being obsessive or judgemental.
I’M FREAKING OUT!! When managing their time, Gold’s biggest stressors are: Unexpected changes or sudden last-minute situations. Having to do several things at once. Not having time to make a plan. Chaos and disorganization When others don’t follow the rules. Golds are frustrated by irresponsibility, lack of planning or discipline, high risk taking, illegal behavior and laziness.
BLUE
If your highest number was in the third column (GLOBE), you are a BLUE!
BLUE Need to feel unique and authentic! Enthusiastic, sympathetic and personal: they look for meaning and significance in life! Warm, communicative, compassionate: need to contribute, encourage and care about what they do. Idealistic, spiritual and sincere: value integrity and unity in their relationships. Peaceful, flexible and imaginative: they are natural romantics, poets and nurturers
BLUE At work: have a strong desire to influence others so that they lead more significant lives. Do well motivating and interacting with others In love: seek harmonious relationships – true romantic who believe in love that lasts forever! During childhood: extremely imaginative. Found it difficult to fit into structure of school life. Respond much better to encouragement rather than to competition. Seek recognition and sensitive to discord or rejection.
COMMUNICATING WITH BLUE Blues care about people, relationships and fostering growth in themselves and others – when speaking, they focus attention on creating a relationship or reconnecting to convey information. Tips for success: Acknowledge them and their efforts. Show your appreciation! Be inclusive Have patience Don’t bark orders! Blues can frustrate others by being passive, lack of planning, avoidance of conflict, suppressing problems and being overly generous or sentimental.
I’M FREAKING OUT! When managing their time, Blue’s biggest stressors are: Being overextended. Allowing personal situations to supersede their work schedules. Saying “no.” Socializing. Blues are frustrated by violence, lying, personal rejection, sarcasm and lack of communication or close friends.
GREEN
If your highest number was in the last column (MATH SYMBOLS), you are a GREEN!
GREEN Always seek knowledge and understanding! Analytical, global and conceptual: live their lives by their own standards! Cool, calm and collected: need explanations and answers. Inventive, logical and perfectionists: value intelligence, fairness and justice. Abstract, hypothetical and investigative: natural non-conformists, visionaries and problem solvers.
GREEN At work: independent thinkers – drawn to constant challenges in career. Like to leave systems in place to be run and supported by others. In love: head rules over the heart, hate repetition and find it difficult to express feelings. Uneasy when emotions control them. During childhood: acted much older than their years! Focused on achieving in subjects that were mentally stimulating. Impatient with drill and routine, question authority – need to respect before they can learn
COMMUNICATION WITH GREEN Greens communicate for the purpose of gathering or sharing information. In conversation, their attentions are focused on the matter at hand, not on the relationship. Tips for success: Give them time to think! Skip the “small talk.” Avoid redundancy. Give them the “big picture” point first, then get into details. Don’t misinterpret their need for information as interrogation! Greens can frustrate others by not being sociable, living in the future, being wordy, blowing up over criticisms, refusing to go with the flow and being too independent.
I’M FREAKING OUT! When managing their time, Green’s biggest stressors are: Wasting time with idle chit-chat. Having to make a decision without enough information. Rushing to produce something that will meet another’s timeline. Being forced to spend time on something that does not make sense to them. Greens are frustrated by routine, small talk, plagiarism, illogical arguments, social functions and incompetence.
Clarifying the topic… There is no “one size fits all” that puts every single personality into a box! Every person reacts to situations in their own way. It’s important to still get to know your peers as individuals! Similarly, everyone acts differently in separate environments! You may be a Gold at work and a Blue at home! It’s perfectly normal…
