2. Greenstick Fracture An incomplete break where one side of the bone is broken and the other side is bent. Similar effect to trying to break a green stick of wood Usually caused by falls Arm bones are the most likely location Prevalent in children because their bones are softer and more flexible

3. Greenstick Fracture cont. Symptoms include: Abnormally bent or twisted limb Swelling at the fracture sight *Pain is absent or minimal compared to a typical fracture Fracture usually diagnosed with X-ray, but an ultrasound or CT scan may also be used Since children’s bones heal quickly, cast may be removed in as little as 3-4 weeks

4. Spiral Fracture Fracture line curves around the shaft of the bone Caused by twisting of the bone and usually a result of a sports injury More prevalent in people with fragile bones whether due to age or poor diet

5. Spiral Fracture cont. Symptoms include: Swelling and bruising at the fracture site Extreme pain The spiraling nature of the fracture usually causes a delay in the healing process *Spiral fractures in children is usually a sign of child abuse

6. Comminuted Fracture Bone is crushed or splintered in more than two locations Usually caused by car accidents, bullet injury, or sever fall More prevalent with the elderly and people with bone diseases

7. Comminuted Fracture cont. Symptoms include: Swelling and warm sensation at the site Sever pain (possibly causing the patient to faint) Typically take longer to heal due to the complexity of the injury Treatment may include surgery where the bone is held in place with pins and plates.

8. Impacted Fracture Bone is broken into several fragments and pushed into each other. Caused by collisions, falls or other accidents with a high-impact force More prevalent in elderly due to their brittle, fragile bones

9. Impacted Fracture cont. Symptoms include: throbbing pain Swelling and bruising at the fracture site Possibility of a rattling or cracking noise Fracture diagnosed with a CT scan or MRI scan provide clear image of the broken fragments
