Does Your Blog Design Really Need Made Over?
Cheryl J.
Recently, I gave my blog design a small makeover. Af ter a while I tend to get bored with the same ole same ole
so change needs to come into play every so of ten.
But that’s not all, I had other reasons. I’ll tell you about that in a little bit. Even though it’s still not exactly the
way I want it, it has def initely been spruced up.
Making over your blog design may be just what your blog needs. Variety is the spice of lif e, right? You don’t
necessarily have to have a sexy and stylish design, but a f ew tweaks here and there wouldn’t hurt.
Transitioning f rom an old design to a new one can sometimes be a shock to regular readers.
But f or the most part, it may just be more inviting
than you think. So, how do you make sure the
transition goes smoothly? First of all, everyone isn’t
going to like everything you do. Let’s just make that
clear. But there are some ways that you can make
sure your readers will like your new blog design and
have your blog makeover a huge success.
Begin with asking yourself why you
want a makeover in the f irst place.
One of the most common mistakes blog owners make, is doing a makeover when one isn’t even necessary. It’s
a common thing to get bored of a blog design just like I did. But one of my main reasons was to be able to
capture more leads and build my list. I recently started mentoring and will be launching some group programs
and one on one coaching, so it was sorta like a rebranding type of thing.
Now if you’re just tired of looking at the same thing all the time, it’s understandable. However, your readers
only spend a small amount of time on your blog and won’t get bored out of their minds unless your content
isn’t valuable, not because of your design.
But if you have a really good reason, like I did, then be clear about it as you begin your redesign process. Make
it a smart business decision.
You have the option to stage it and get the kinks out.
T his is one of the great things about having a WordPress blog. You don’t have to just push a makeover live.
You can stage it in a subf older by using several WordPress plug-ins that will create a staging blog f or you on a
subdomain. You can also just copy your entire site to a new domain and work with it f rom there.
2. How about that f or working out the techy stuf f and design critters bef ore your new blog design goes live?
Since I didn’t do a whole lot to my blog, I didn’t f eel the need to do this. But f or some major transf orming, it
might be worth it. Of ten times makeovers may seem like they work perf ectly on the surf ace, but there might be
a f ew glitches in the system that need taken care of .
Feedback would be helpf ul.
Since the relationships you build with your readers are so important, why not get some f eedback bef ore you
go live? Send out a brief survey, asking specif ic questions about redesigning your blog and what their
suggestions are. You can ask some of your f riends f or their overall f irst impressions as well. Just have them
browse the site to see how easy is it to navigate. Ask if they have suggestions too. Once you get the answers,
then you can start making some necessary changes.
Keep track of your stats.
It may not seem like such a big deal, but af ter your blog goes live, see if your bounce rate or length of time
stayed goes up or down. T his is usually an indication that people either f ind the site user f riendly, or not. If
people are leaving quickly, that probably means they f ound your new design harder to use.
Just do this f or the f irst couple of weeks or so af ter your new blog design goes live. You can use Google
Analytics f or this if you aren’t doing so already. It’s really easy to set up and is quite usef ul.
Making your blog over can be a f un process but it can also be f rustrating if you are doing it yourself like I did. It
took me three days to get it right but it was something I did with a purpose. You
really don’t want to do something like this “just cause”. T here are plenty of other
tasks and work that you could be doing f or your business so always have your
purpose in f ront of you bef ore you do anything.
Stay Driven and Prosper,
