•Describe the function of a neuron
•Describe the role of each of the parts of a neuron including,
Dendrites, soma, axon, axon terminals, nucleus, synapse,
synaptic transmission, nurotransmitters, and myelin sheath
•Describe how a neuron transmits information throughout the
brain (neural impulse)
5. Dendrites - The function of dendrites is to receive information from other neurons.
Soma - controls the metabolism and maintenance of the cell.
Axon - carries information away from the soma toward
cells that communicate with the neuron.
Axon terminals - secrete a chemical called a neurotransmitter
Nucleus - Contains the instructions for the cell (DNA)
Synapse - This is the junction between two neurons where the end of the axon (terminal
buttons) of the presynaptic (before the synapse) neuron comes into close proximity
